Planting & Care

1. Planting: The Green Vase Zelkova is easy to plant in your yard. Because of its tolerance to most soil conditions, you can plant this tree anywhere you like as long as it’s in full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). Also, adding mulch to the base of your tree will help keep the moisture in and prevent weeds and grass competition. You don’t need to add anything to your soil when planting – simply plant in a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball.

2. Watering: This tree can tolerate wet or dry conditions. Be sure to water the tree weekly in its young life to ensure proper growth. After a couple of years, you only need to water the tree during very dry spells.

If you’re not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it’s time to water your tree.

3. Pruning: You don’t need to prune the Green Vase Zelkova, but it can be helpful to remove dead bark and branches in the fall.

Zelkova Serrata (often referred to as the Japanese Zelkova tree) is a beautiful and elegant vase-shaped tree that grows to approximately 100 feet in height. It has an enormous trunk capable of expanding to more than 4 feet in diameter and grows best with plenty of sun exposure. The leaves are around 1-4 inches long and turn a beautiful orange and burnt umber hue in the autumn.

The Japanese Zelkova tree is characterised by its short, wide trunk which splits into multiple upright stems that form a prominent, round-topped canopy. It grows quickly when young and slows down as it matures. The texture of the beautiful leaves is fine, making them delicate to look at and ideal for ornamental purposes.

While this tree does enjoy full sunlight, it can thrive in partial sunspots also. The soil should be moist and well drained, and it’s best to use a potassium rich fertiliser. The Zelkova is adaptable to various weather conditions, ensuring it can tolerate heat, dehydration and nutrient-poor soils far better than similar breeds. In order to allow light to access the inner canopy, the tree should be periodically thinned.
The Zelkova can be used as a showcase lawn tree and gives a sense of grace to any landscape garden. It is possible that this tree can grow in urban areas so long as it has some light exposure. It would look beautiful as a street tree or lining a park. Its attractive bark characteristics, vase shape and thick canopy make it both resilient and visually stunning for decorative purposes.
The Japanese Zelkova tree has a delightful presentation. Its durability and longevity mean it can be planted in most locations, weather conditions and oil types and still thrive.

Japanese Zelkova is a tough urban tree for residential shade and street plantings. It has a spreading, generally upright branching, vase-shaped habit. The crown is shorter and more rounded than the American elm. The bark is a smooth, reddish brown when young with prominent cherry-like lenticels. As the tree ages, the outer bark is gray-brown and often exfoliating exposing an orangish inner bark. Medium green leaves turn to shades of yellow, orange, brown, deep red to reddish-purple in fall. This tree will tolerate most soil types including those with a pH to about 7.5, but prefers deep, moist, well drained soils. It does well in full sun. Established trees are fairly drought and wind tolerant (if properly pruned). It is resistant to Dutch elm disease with good resistance to elm leaf beetle and Japanese beetle. Young trees are susceptible to frost so transplanting should be done in the spring. Pruning should be done in fall, and Japanese zelkova will require some pruning to develop a strong structure. The main branches should spaced along a single trunk, so they develop a secure hold on the trunk especially in urban areas. Branches should remain less than 1/2 the diameter of the trunk to maintain a strong form. Planting uses for zelkova include lawn, shade, and street tree, parking lot island, buffer strip, and bonsai.

Village Green Japanese Zelkova

It is noted for its graceful shape, clean foliage, attractive bark and resistance to Dutch elm disease. Zelkova has in fact been promoted in recent years as a substitute for American elm (Ulmus americana) because of its resistance to Dutch elm disease. Insignificant small green flowers appear in spring as the foliage emerges. Flowers give way to small, non-showy, ovate, wingless drupes that ripen in autumn. Oblong-elliptic dark green leaves (to 3 inches long) with coarse, ciliate marginal teeth and acuminate tips. Fall color is a consistent rusty red. Smooth gray bark in youth exfoliates with age to reveal orange-brown inner bark. Japanese Zelkova is a tough, pest- and disease-resistant tree suitable for planting along streets, in parks, or in residential areas.
