Plants for good luck

The front door is one of the primary focal points when assessing the feng shui of any home.

This single part of a house has countless factors to consider in order to getting it right.

These include determining the best main door direction, choosing the colors for the door, identifying the best location to construct it, etc.

Saying that, the goal that any DIY feng shui practitioner should focus on is to not get things wrong instead of getting things right. This implies that the primary objective should be to avoid negative energy rather than harnessing positive energy.

For example, if the main entrance of a house has a view of a hostile poison arrow such as that of a pylon, then you need to remedy that before moving onto enhancements.

Only when negative energy can be effectively subdued can one start to explore tapping on positive energy.

On of the common front door considerations is whether to place plants at the door area, and if so, what are the best feng shui plants for the front door.

Plants beside the front door

A lot of people don’t realize that they have plants or flowers positioned right beside the main door into the house even though they had put them there themselves.

I’ve experienced various instances where I had to point them out right in front of home owners for them to realize that they have naturally and instinctively set up potted plants right beside the main door because it just felt right.

Placing plants at the front door area helps to slow down chi before it makes it’s way into a house.

This is widely considered as a good feng shui placement as fast moving energy can often be harmful to the health of the home.

In addition to that, plants are made up of natural wood energy.

This can add a needed boost to the front door area if it needs the presence of wood. It can also act as a repellent against malicious poison arrows that arrive from the northeast or southwest direction. This is because these two directions carry earth based energy and would be subdued by the presence of wood.

Having said that, it would take big plants to defend against big sha chi.

Something else that few feng shui masters share is a closely guarded secret of manipulating the facing direction where energy is arriving from.

Large tree plants can actually interfere with energy enough to push it a few degrees away from a property’s original facing direction. This makes it possible to “shift” the facing direction of a house from one sector of the 24 mountains to another.

For example, if a house is facing N1 direction and the homeowner finds it undesirable, a tree plant with a strong presence on the left side of the main door can actually nudge the facing direction to N2. Essentially changing the natal chart of the house.

Don’t believe me? Bring a compass around the house and see how the needle behaves when you get close to each big pillar.

This however, is much more advanced stuff and I’m sharing it out of interest. You should not attempt to do this unless you are absolutely certain with what you are doing.

On top of that, it would take quite a significant plant to be able to influence energy in this manner.

Back to the main topic of plant door planter ideas.

Plants at the front entrance can play a positive role not just to the overall aesthetics, but have positive feng shui uses as well.

You would then have to make two decisions of whether to use big or small plants, and what plants to buy.

Big plants

If your purpose for placing plants near the front door area is for the wood energy that they naturally bring, then big plants are definitely the way to go.

When we talk about size of plants, the 3 key factors that should be considered are the height, the amount of foliage, and the girth of the main trunk.

It’s difficult to set a standard of what size constitutes to a big plant. However, most people should be able to judge for themselves what is big and what is small.

I can only say that if a plant is 1 meter tall, has so much leaves that you cannot spot a a hole to see through to the other side of it, and the main stem has a girth of 3 inches, it would definitely be considered as a big plant.

That’s not saying that anything less that the specifications described above would be a small plant. Again, it’s down to judgment and the size of the house and door.

Here are some of the best good fortune plants for the front door.

Money tree

How can any one ignore a tree plant with a name as attention-seeking as the money tree plant.

This plant can grow to quite a height and would be able to shield and distort negative energy arriving at the main door.

It also symbolizes… wealth and money. So it can fill positive energy with more auspiciousness as it enters the house.

They certainly make great front entrance plants.

Iron tree

The iron tree plant has a classy look to it.

So much so that the demand for them are so high that there are businesses then rent them out to event organizers just to place them in corners of event locations.

They make great front door plants and blend in very well with modern design homes, as well as become a staunch protector of the front entrance.

Areca palm

The areca plam is another classic favorite of home owners.

They have beautiful and gracious foliage that blocks everything from view.

This makes them very useful in blocking unsightly areas such as drains or pipes outdoors.

However, they tend to have a wide foliage. This means that you would need to have a wide space beside the main door in order to place this properly.

Otherwise, it’s leaves would probably obstruct the main entry way into the door.

Boston fern

The boston fern is another great plant that can block and hide most sources of poison arrows that are present outside the house and directed at the front door.

The are look lush sophisticated for modern home designs.

The drawback is that their foliage can take up significant space.

So only consider it if there is enough outdoor space to place it without causing any obstruction to the door.

Small plants

It was mentioned earlier that big plants would be able to bring significant wood element energy.

Small plants individually are not going to make any significant impact. They do make their presence felt in numbers.

So if your intention is to tune up wood element in the space, then you need to have a few small plants to have any meaningful impact.

But if your reason is purely from a visual standpoint, then go with one plant if you want. They are still going to be lucky plants in front of the house.

Jade plant

The jade plant is a luscious looking plant with succulent leaves. Their symbolism of wealth makes them so suitable for front door entrance areas.

I’m not just saying this because it’s one of my favorite good luck plants for the front door.

They are simply wealth attracting plants that can bring more money luck to anyone willing to take care of them.

Golden pothos

Aside from being one of the money plants that people often refer to, the golden pothos is well-known as a cleanser plant that detox and refresh the air.

Because of the “lazy” nature of this plant, gardeners like to keep them potted and hang them from the ceiling.

If you choose to do the same, they can be hung at chest height. Don’t let them be above your head.

Lime tree

The lime tree is a good luck plant that is generally considered as auspicious due to their bright orange fruits when ripe.

And while they are called trees, they are usually kept in small sizes for easy management.

A plant like this at the front door can also add a touch of cheerfulness whenever you see it when arriving home.

Bamboo plant

The bamboo plant is one of the most well-loved lucky plants in feng shui. It is believed to not just bring good luck, but also eliminate bad luck.

It would definitely be a welcomed addition if you are creating a line up of small plants near the door.

Feng shui front door plants

It’s worth clarifying again that if your intention of plant placement in at the main door area is for the presence of wood element, then you either need big plants or a number of small plants.

If this is not on your mind and you simply want to place them there for aesthetic reason while ensuring that you don’t cause any feng shui afflictions, then you can pick any of the above stated plants without having to worry.

The exception is when you are using a lot of them to build a green wall of nature or something like that.

In that case, you should look at the fundamental energy nature of the front door area and determine if wood energy is going to be good feng shui or cause afflictions and energy conflicts.

Plants Considered Lucky – Lucky Plants Inside The House And In The Garden

While New Year’s is a common time for traditions involving luck, it’s the “luck of the Irish” and four-leaf clovers that I most think of when it comes to plants that are considered lucky. Let’s learn more about lucky plants you can grow.

Plants That Bring Good Luck

Whether you’re looking for lucky plants inside the home or out in the garden, there are a number of plants considered lucky that you can choose from.

Lucky plants inside the house

  • Lucky bamboo – this plant isn’t a bamboo at all but a type of Dracaena. Associated with Feng-Shui, each arrangement of this plant has a specific number of stalks, each with its own specific meaning: three means happiness, longevity and wealth; five stalks are for wealth; six will bring luck; seven good health, eight for growth and 10 for completion. If you’re “lucky” enough to have 21 stalks, then it’s believed to bring blessings of enduring health and great wealth.
  • Hawaiian Ti plant – this foliage plant can be found in many vibrant colors. Early Polynesians believed it had mystical powers, so to grow one in your home is thought to bring good fortune to those residing there. And for anyone growing ti plants with two stalks can double their luck, while finding love too.
  • Money tree – the Pachira money tree is another plant commonly used in Feng Shui and also believed to bring the grower good luck. Interestingly, money trees are often braided together, but in order for the “luck” to work, you’ll need to have three to five braided plants, steering clear of the unlucky number four. Additionally, its leaves must have five or more “fingers” to be lucky.
  • Jade plant – according to Feng Shui lore, plants with rounded leaves are sure to bring good fortune and the jade plant is no exception. Jade is a traditional gift given to new business owners and, when placed near the entrance, is thought to bring prosperity and success. No reason this shouldn’t work for the home too.
  • Shamrock plant – a popular story is that St. Patrick, the saint who brought Christianity to Ireland, plucked a shamrock from the grass at his feet to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, as each leaf symbolizes the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As such, the shamrock plant (oxalis or wood sorrel) is one of those plants considered lucky.
  • Snake plant – also known as mother-in-law plant, whatever you call it, this plant has been deemed a good luck plant because of its ability to absorb poisonous gases from the air, removing toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. Additionally, this healthy plant can help provide natural humidity when grouped with others.

Good luck plants for the garden

  • White clover – so the actual “shamrock” plucked by St. Patrick was most likely a white clover (Trifolium repens) and is difficult to grow indoors. That being said, you’ll normally find the plant readily growing in your yard, either planted there by you or as a weed. With clover leaves, one leaf represents faith, the second hope, the third love and the rare four-leaf clover brings luck.
  • Basil – not only a popular culinary herb for growing in the garden, basil is also said to bring with it love, wealth, luck, and beauty. Additionally, basil is thought to contain antidepressant, antiseptic and antibacterial properties, and may repel flies too. It is also thought to help people to achieve financial success with little effort.
  • Honeysuckle – not all honeysuckle vines are weeds, and in addition to the intoxicating fragrance and tasty nectar, honeysuckle is included in the plants that bring good luck. It’s also believed to offer protection, too.
  • Jasmine – another plant that produces a lovely aroma is jasmine. This plant may also attract love and money when grown in and around the home. In fact, jasmine oil is believed to be one of the most powerful aphrodisiacs around. Smell is a potent sense.
  • Roses – roses are red, violets are blue and growing roses might bring luck to you. Yes, the rose is believed among other things to attract love, healing, and luck. Additionally, the different colors associated with roses have specific meanings attached to them too.

Growing these plants and trees around might bring the much-needed good fortune to you. Select the plants carefully. If your selection of a plant is improper or if they are placed at wrong places, they can cause adverse effects. Go green with these plants and live happily.

Bamboo has long been known as the Chinese symbol for strength, due to its fast growth and resilience. Lucky bamboo, which is actually a member of the dracaena family and not bamboo at all, is given as a gift of good fortune as it looks like bamboo, but is much easier to grow as a houseplant. A gift of lucky bamboo symbolizes the wish for a strong life filled with prosperity.

If you are giving lucky bamboo as a gift, the number of stalks given determines the type of blessing being bestowed.

  • Two stalks are sent as an expression of love, and are also said to double your luck.
  • Three stalks bring three kinds of luck: happiness, long life, and wealth.
  • Four stalks are never given. In Chinese language, the word for “four” sounds very similar to the word for “death”, so four stalks are said to draw negative energy. Giving one as a gift would be very rude and interpreted as giving a death wish.
  • Five stalks attract health to all five areas of your life: emotional, intuitive, mental, physical and spiritual.
  • Six stalks attract prosperity and advantages to achieve greater wealth. In the Chinese language, “six” sounds like the word “luck”.
  • Seven stalks bestow good health.
  • Eight stalks improve fertility. In Chinese, “eight” sounds like the word used for “grow”.
  • Nine stalks symbolize great luck.
  • Ten stalks bestow a wish for the recipient to feel complete and complacent. The sender wants the recipient to have everything in life that they envision and desire.
  • Twenty-one stalks are given to bestow a very powerful overall blessing for great wealth and enduring health.

The lucky receiver of lucky bamboo receives both a beautiful houseplant and a blessing of good luck.

The Basics of Gifting Lucky Bamboo Plant

Lucky bamboo is one of the most recognizable and favorite Fen Shui gifts. It’s because of its ability to complete a balance of essential five elements of water, wood, earth, fire and metal. Its popularity is also due to the fact that it requires little care and can survive in any kind of light.

Feng shui principles claim that bamboo attracts auspicious chi energy. Since the bamboo plant is strong, it can energize your home and bring harmony to it. While bringing a bamboo plant to your home, make sure to select the proper number of stalks as each number represents different kinds of energy. Usually, the more stalks in the planter, the greater the blessing of good fortune and luck. One must never place a lucky bamboo plant in their bedroom as this creates too much Yang energy resulting in an inauspicious effect. The best locations for a lucky bamboo to be placed in are the east or south sector of your home or office.

Many people like to give lucky bamboo for housewarming gifts, birthdays, anniversaries, grand openings, award, achievements and other auspicious occasions. Receiving this plant signifies the rise in your luck. When gifting a lucky bamboo plant, choose an elaborate woven lattice design or an arrangement of individual stalks tied together with a ride ribbon.
Lucky log bamboo is a favorite for businesses to give as gifts, especially to other companies since it promises to keep the business growing. It is also symbolic of a strong life that’s filled with prosperity. Some varieties produce fragrant white flowers in addition to the healthy green leaves.

How to Use Prosperity Herbs?

The herbs themselves have little magical power. To practice true sorcery with the use of herbs, you need to infuse them with energy. This practice is advanced and requires the knowledge of the elements and the ability to invoke/evoke and direct them.

Each herb carries elemental properties that correspond to its medical uses. These can be seen by looking at the domains of each planet. Furthermore, to really enhance them, you should look at the planetary hours to amplify the effect of each ritual.

Different things are needed for each magic ritual. For example, the right candles act as a beacon for spirits and the correct use of colors, images, and herbs can assist in the success of a ritual.

How Can You Create a Prosperity Bag?

Below you’ll find the easiest way to prepare a bag that brings prosperity.

This prosperity is not only understood economically but also as prosperity in love and friendship. The bag is straightforward to create and does not need things that are impossible to find.

What we need to create a bag:

  • A square of green fabric
  • Mortar or bowl to crush and mix herbs
  • A lace (to tie the bag)
  • Sage leaves
  • Pine needles
  • Almond oil
  • Bay Laurel Berries

The preparation of the bag is quite simple, and you can do it in just a few steps, without needing some special energy.

You just need a little concentration for what you are doing.

Here’s a process:

  1. First, make sure you have all the ingredients at hand, so you don’t have to diverge from the work you are doing.
  2. In the bowl or mortar, crush the bay leaves and sage leaves together. They should look like dust when you’re finished.
  3. Break the pine needles into tiny pieces and then add them to the mixture you have in the mortar or bowl.
  4. Pour the almond oil in the bowl and form a homogeneous mixture. Mix it well and concentrate on the desire that you want to receive.
  5. Spread the tissue on a flat part and fill it with at least two tablespoons of the mixture you have created.
  6. Now take the 4 corners of the tissue and close it in a small bag.
  7. With the lace, you prepared earlier, tie the bag and tie precisely 3 knots.

Have this bag close to you.

  • Resins and rubber, along with wood, roots, and oils can be burned as incense. It is always a good idea to burn some incense to try it before any vital ritual to determine how well it can burn, and the quality of the fragrance. Xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx

The New Year is fast approaching, and with it come our hopes and dreams of a happy year. Many of us wish for good luck, good health and good fortune. Could the key be in the plants we grow?

Like any other good luck charm, certain plants are thought to be lucky and to attract good fortune and happiness. These plants are reputed to radiate positive energy wherever they grow.

If you would like more joy and luck in the New Year, perhaps you should consider growing one, or more, of these plants.

Most popular plants

Lucky Bamboo: The most well-known of the “lucky” plants is Lucky Bamboo. This popular plant is not a bamboo at all, but rather a member of the lily family. Lucky bamboo is said to attract health, wealth, happiness and love. The stalks of lucky bamboo are grown and tied into bundles of various numbers that determine the kind of energy desired. In general, more stalks mean a more powerful bundle. Three stalks represent happiness, longevity and wealth; five stalks are for wealth alone; six are for luck; and seven are for good health.

Money tree: Another popular plant often used in Feng Shui design, money tree is said to produce a positive energy flow that brings good luck and fortune. In Chinese culture, money tree is traditionally given as a gift during New Year celebrations as a sign of good fortune for the coming year. Clover: Who hasn’t rejoiced at finding a four-leaf clover? Clover is another well-known and popular lucky plant, used by early Celts to ward off evil. St. Patrick later used the leaf to demonstrate the Holy Trinity. The first clover leaf represents faith, the second leaf hope, the third love, and the fourth luck.

Top 6 Plants that Bring Good Luck

No matter what your job is, the office can be a stressful place. The tension and pressure encountered in the workplace can have an adverse effect on your health. While you cannot escape reality all together, there are ways in which you can reduce the stress in your work environment. One method you can implement to do this is to keep plants on your desk or in your cubicle. Not only do they clean the air around you, certain Vastu approved plants can reduce negative vibrations and emit positivity. They help to maintain a calm demeanor during stressful situations.

Jade Plant

The plant is known to bring an incredible amount of wealth, fortune, health and peace into any space- be it the home or the office. The plant is quite low maintenance, but it requires some trimming from time to time. This is a small price to pay for the good fortune this plant can bring to you.

Money Plant

As the name itself suggests, the money plant brings economic success into your life. The plant has a braided stem and well-rounded leaves which can form a beautiful canopy. The tree grows well in moist soil, so it needs to be watered regularly. Also, it needs to be kept in medium sunlight or in partially shaded places.

Peace lilies

Although this plant looks exotic, it needs surprisingly low attention. They bear flowers that stay in full bloom for long periods of time. They are natural air purifiers and fresheners and stand as a symbol of positivity and goodwill. If you love flowers but do not want to encumber your office space with delicate blossoms, this sturdy yet beautiful plant should be your first choice.

Dragon Trees

Dragon trees are also known to bring good luck to the workplace. Also, they remove toxins from the air and are very convenient to grow. The dragon tree does not need to be bathed in water- just a spray or a wet wipe down is enough for this plant. It also requires no direct sunlight. This is why this plant is such a popular choice when it comes to the workplace.

English Ivy

This plant is the most effective natural air purifier out there. It can remove the toughest of waste in the air. It is a good choice for closed offices which do not have adequate ventilation. Also, if your workplace is near a smoking zone, you should keep this plant, since it is a good absorbent of smoke. Although it does not have any Feng Shui attributes, its cleaning characteristics make it a worthy contender on this list.

The art of Feng Shui suggests that while looking for lucky office plants, you should select the ones that have rounded leaves and clustered canopies. Also, you must keep away thorny plants from your home and workplace since they are said to obstruct the inflow of positive energy and wealth. Only take as many plants as you can manage, since at the end of the day you will be responsible for their well-being, and in turn, yours.

How To Attract Good Luck: 4 Secrets Backed By Research

Before we commence with the festivities, I wanted to thank everyone for helping my first book become a Wall Street Journal bestseller. To check it out, click here.

Ever had a run of bad luck? It feels like the world is actively conspiring against you.

Ever wonder if you can improve your luck? And I don’t mean with voodoo or magic crystals.

Turns out somebody has done scientific research on luck. So I gave him a call.

Richard Wiseman is a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire and the bestselling author of many books including: Luck Factor. (His excellent YouTube channel is here.)

Richard studied over 1000 people. And, yes, it turns out some people are very unlucky. Here’s Richard:

One woman reported having 8 car accidents in one 150 mile journey. She was also unlucky in love. After joining a dating agency, her first date fell off his motorcycle and broke his leg. The second date walked into a glass door and broke his nose. Eventually she met her future husband and the church they were going to get married in burned down the day before the wedding.

Ouch. Can you change your luck? Yes, you can. Here’s Richard:

What the work shows as a whole is that people can change their luck. Luck is not something paranormal in nature. It’s something that we are creating by our thoughts and behavior.

Richard ran a series of experiments he called “Luck School” and taught unlucky people how to act more like lucky people do. The result?

Via Luck Factor:

In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased. On average, these people estimated that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.

And not only were they luckier afterward, tests results showed they were also happier.

Okay, so you don’t want the church to burn down before your wedding day. Want to go to “Luck School”? Here’s what Richard said about how you can get lucky…

1) Maximize Opportunities

It makes intuitive sense: if you lock yourself in your house, how many exciting, serendipitous things are going to happen to you? Not many.

In his book Luck Factor, Richard wrote: “Lucky people create, notice, and act upon the chance opportunities in their lives.” Here’s Richard:

Lucky people just try stuff. Unlucky people suffered from paralysis by analysis. They wouldn’t do anything until they walked through every single angle and by then the world had moved on. They don’t gain the benefits of learning through doing. I’m a big fan of starting small, trying lots of projects, seeing what works and what doesn’t, and iterating based on feedback.

Certain personality types are luckier because they tend to create scenarios that maximize opportunities and thereby increase luck. Who is more lucky?

  • People who are extroverted: More time with others, more interesting possibilities.
  • People who aren’t neurotic: Tense, anxious people are less likely to notice and take advantage of opportunities.
  • People who are open to new experiences: If you resist the new, you’re probably not going to have many interesting things happen.

And research shows that the old saying is true: “You regret most the things you did not do.” Over time, we tend to rationalize our failures. But we cannot rationalize away those things we never tried at all.

So keep trying new things. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you always gotten.

(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling book here.)

Okay, so you’re doing more stuff. Great. But what about when it comes time to make decisions? What can we learn from lucky people?

2) Listen To Hunches

Lucky people act on their intuitions across many areas of their lives.

Via Luck Factor:

Almost 90 percent of lucky people said that they trusted their intuition when it came to personal relationships, and almost 80 percent said it played a vital role in their career choices… About 20 percent more lucky than unlucky people used their intuition when it came to making important financial decisions, and over 20 percent more used their intuition when thinking about their career choices.

And intuition isn’t magic. Research has shown it’s often valid. Here’s Richard:

What intuition seems to be most of the time is when you’ve got expertise in the area, that somehow the body and the brain have detected a pattern that you haven’t consciously seen… When we were talking to our lucky people they would often say, “If I get a gut feeling about something I stop and consider it.” Even when unlucky people got those feelings, they didn’t follow them because they didn’t know where they came from. They were anxious about the world.

Want to increase luck in your life? Go with your gut more often.

So what mindset should you take toward life if you want a visit from Lady Luck?

3) Expect Good Fortune

Plain and simple — it’s optimism.

You’re more likely to try new things, follow through on opportunities and have them succeed if you believe they’ll work out well.

Via Luck Factor:

On average, lucky people thought that there was about a 90 percent chance of having a great time on their next holiday, (and) an 84 percent chance of achieving at least one of their lifetime ambitions…

And that optimism gives lucky people more “grit.” When you think things will work out, you persevere. And when you’re resilient, you give possibilities more time to work out in your favor.

Skeptics might be shaking their heads right now: But we all know people who aren’t just optimistic — they’re utterly deluded. Are you saying we should lie to ourselves?

Um… kinda. Turns out that while pessimists do see the world more accurately, optimists are more likely to be lucky because those delusions push them toward opportunities. Here’s Richard:

Lucky people are buying into positive superstitions. In studies we’ve seen that good luck charms do improve performance, whether it’s physical skills like playing golf or mental skills like memory tasks.

You heard that right: research shows that good luck charms work.

Via The Courage Quotient: How Science Can Make You Braver:

The researchers found that by activating good luck beliefs, these objects were consistently able to boost people’s self-confidence and that this up-tick in self-assurance in turn affected a wide range of performance. Lucky thinking, it turned out in this study, positively affected people’s ability to solve puzzles and to remember the pictures depicted on thirty-six different cards, and it improved their putting performance in golf! In fact, people with a lucky charm performed significantly better than did the people who had none.

A number of studies have shown that being a little deluded does bring benefits:

  • Superstitions can be performance enhancing.
  • Wishing someone luck makes them do better.
  • Irrational overconfidence increases productivity and improves teamwork.
  • “Self-deception has been associated with stress reduction, a positive self-bias, and increased pain tolerance, all of which could enhance motivation and performance during competitive tasks.”

The world can be hard. Sometimes life feels random. But research shows feeling you have some control — even if you don’t — is powerful.

(To learn how Navy SEALs develop grit and never give up, click here.)

But what happens when things still go wrong? What should you do when you’re acting like a lucky person but bad luck still whacks you in the face?

4) Turn Bad Luck Into Good

Lucky people aren’t always lucky — but they handle adversity differently than unlucky people.

Via Luck Factor:

  • Lucky people see the positive side of their bad luck.
  • Lucky people are convinced that any ill fortune in their lives will, in the long run, work out for the best.
  • Lucky people do not dwell on their ill fortune.
  • Lucky people take constructive steps to prevent more bad luck in the future.

How do you respond to disappointment?

Giving up, getting gloomy and locking yourself in the house won’t help the world offer you better opportunities. Here’s Richard:

When things get tough you’ve got two choices: you can either fold or you can keep going. Lucky people are very resilient. I remember talking to one lucky person that had fallen down some stairs and broken his leg. I said, “I bet you don’t consider yourself quite so lucky now.” He said the last time he went to a hospital he met a nurse and they fell in love. Now the two of them are happily married twenty-five years later. He said, “It was the best thing that ever happened to me… So, yeah, things can look bad now, but the long term effect of this might be very, very positive.” That’s a very resilient attitude. Lucky people tend to have that sort of approach.

Find the silver lining behind the cloud. And don’t assume there’s a cloud behind every silver lining.

(To learn how to overcome regret, click here.)

Let’s round this all up and learn the final (and most important) benefit of believing in luck.

Sum Up

Here’s what Richard had to say about how to attract good luck:

  1. Maximize Opportunities: Keep trying new things.
  2. Listen To Hunches: Especially if it’s an area where you have some experience, trust your intuition.
  3. Expect Good Fortune: Be an optimist. A little delusion can be good.
  4. Turn Bad Luck Into Good: Don’t dwell on the bad. Look at the big picture.

So maybe you’re still a skeptic. Even if luck is real, you don’t want to give in to delusion. Give it a shot anyway. There are other benefits. A little delusion can improve relationships.

People with positive illusions about their significant other are more satisfied, score higher on love and trust and have fewer problems. In fact, believing in luck might actually make you more fun.

Via The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking: How Irrational Beliefs Keep Us Happy, Healthy, and Sane:

Magical thinking is also important for letting loose and having a good time. Brugger finds a positive correlation between magical ideation and the ability to find pleasure in life. More magic, more fun. (As long as reality stays within arm’s reach.) “Those students who are not magical are not typically those who enjoy going to parties,” he says. “To be totally unmagic is very unhealthy.”

In the relatively brief time Richard spent with his test subjects he experienced a similar thing first-hand.

People who feel they are lucky are more charismatic. It felt good to be around them. Here’s Richard:

Through doing countless interviews with lucky and unlucky people I found you could tell within seconds which type of person you were about to interview. The lucky people were more engaging and upbeat. And emotions are contagious. After some time with a lucky person you feel good about yourself and you start to see the world in a very positive way. You spend time with an unlucky person and you start to focus on that back pain you’d almost forgotten about but now appears to be ten times worse. We have some research coming out which shows that one of the major factors is not how you yourself feel, but how you can make other people feel. It’s very closely related to charisma.

So put a good luck charm in your pocket. It looks like science is telling us that believing in luck might not only be the best way to be deluded, it might also be the key to a better life.

And if you enjoyed this post, share it with friends. We could all use some good luck. 🙂

All cultures have their fair share of superstitious beliefs. Some are grounded in ancient wisdoms while others are based on primitive interpretations of natural phenomenon. Irrespective of their origins, they are nevertheless interesting and the beliefs passed on to us by our grandmothers can sometimes work wonders. We collected 18 interesting WEALTH superstitions and rituals that are sure to get readers wondering. If you want to try them out what’s the harm?

1Wearing a jade ring on the little finger is said to bring you wealth. For males, wear on the left hand, and for females, wear on the right hand. The best is to look for rings that are made completely of jade. This can be expensive as it requires a very large piece of jade to carve out a ring, but you do not need to wear the best quality jade – something with a nice translucent green colour will do.

2Cut a length of green string 30cm long. Use a cotton knit string. Tie it 5 times round your little finger in a clockwise direction. For males, do this on your left finger and for females, do this on your right finger. Then make a knot. As you go about your daily activities note that when the knot gets wet, you should again repeat the exercise on the same finger with a new string. The Chinese, especially those of Cantonese origin, believe that by doing this, you are activating plenty of wealth luck.

3Every morning before you step out from the house, use a red pen and write the word for money on your right palm. (Chinese character – Cai). If this is too difficult, try writing the dollar sign. Do this every morning for fifteen days starting with the day of the new moon and it is believed you will receive a “windfall” within three days of the full moon. It is even more effective if you can use red cinnabar to do this. Or better yet, use a stamp which already has auspicious words on it.

4Here is a truly superstitious belief to generate wealth luck. You will need a red coloured wish fulfilling jewel and a money bank. Draw a hexagon star on a piece of paper, place the red jewel on the center of the hexagon, wrap it carefully, then place it under your pillow. Go to sleep. The next morning, place the red jewel in front of the money bank and put a coin inside the money bank. Then close your eyes and repeat your wish as many times as you can. Repeat this ritual for 15 days starting with the new moon.

All through the fifteen days of the waxing moon, by having the red jewel under your pillow and adding a coin each day, by the 15th night you will have completed the ritual to actualize your wish. When your wish has been accomplished, keep the red jewel and coins safely in a container, which should be kept hidden. When you run out of money, you can repeat this wealth-generating ritual. Remember, you must do this during the 15 day phase of the waxing moon!

5.If you are winning some big money during a gambling session, the belief is that you should make sure you do NOT get up to wash your hands. And you should definitely not go to the toilet – better to hold on for as long as possible! In Cantonese, the word pee means “to let go of water”. To the Chinese, water always means money, so if you leave the gambling table to go to the toilet, it is like pouring your money down the drain.

6Gamblers also believe that it is a big NO NO to gamble against a pregnant woman. This is because the Chinese believe that expectant women are “carrying their good fortune inside their belly” and they also have an extra pairs of “eyes” to observe the whole scene. So pregnant women are said to bring good luck to gamblers.

If someone pregnant stands behind you while you are betting, it is believed that you will win. Never touch someone’s shoulders when he/she is busy gambling. Even a light tap on the shoulder is disastrous to a gambler, as they earnestly believe this will cause whatever good luck they have to evaporate. It is vital to observe this sensitivity if you keep the company of people who like to gamble.

7When you are gambling make sure there isn’t someone reading a book behind you or in front of you, because “book” sounds like “to lose” in Chinese.

8The Chinese believe that the SE is the wealth sector in any room you occupy, so it is important to identify this corner. Then make very sure NOT to put or paint the colour red anywhere within this wealth sector. If you do so, it will make it very difficult to obtain wealth luck.

9It is believed that having a few grams of sea salt inside your wallet attracts wealth luck. The best is to place the salt inside a plastic bag, then put it in a secret compartment inside your wallet. You have to change the salt each month, otherwise it loses its potency. There are some who say the use of sea salt can also be extended to the house. Make your house attract wealth luck by having sea salt (placed inside a small plastic container) in all the corners of your house i.e. wherever two walls meet. Change the salt every ten days. You can also hang a bag of sea salt on the center of the main door, changing it once a month. This is said to attract wealth luck. (Maybe because salt attracts water?)

10Chinese gamblers are very superstitious. If they are on a winning streak, they will resent anything out of the ordinary suddenly happening, as they believe this will spoil their luck. So for instance, if they suddenly see a nun or monk approaching, they will stop gambling immediately. This superstitious belief is based on the assumption that the bald heads of monks and nuns symbolize “nothingness” and is a sign that any further gambling will lead to loss of money.

11The Chinese believe that if you place a red fan in the center, South and Southwest of any room you use frequently, this can enhance the wealth luck of the whole house. These corners are of course earth and fire sectors that benefit from fire element energy – hence the benefits of using a red fan. Perhaps feng shui was the origin of this superstition.

12The Chinese are very superstitious when it comes to wearing a ring on the correct finger. To have authority, wear a ring on your index finger. For everlasting love, wear a ring on your ring finger. But remember never wear a ring on the thumb as this strongly signifies loss of wealth and an evaporation of success. Movie stars in Hong Kong are very mindful of the “no ring on the thumb” rule, as it is said this will lead to overnight failure, and of course movie stars are a very superstitious lot!

13Those in business should make sure that a fly swatter should never be left on their cashier counter. This is believed to chase all your customers away. The same with a broom. Never place it near where you collect money. Keep it hidden from view if possible.

14The Chinese believe that walking on “money” is a surefire way of quickly climbing up the financial success ladder. So it is recommended to bury auspicious coins and even real money under floors before they are “finished”. You can also sew a few emperor or dragon coins under carpets. Place these carpets near the main entrance (for attracting wealth) and near the back entrance or at the back balcony (for safety and protection).

15Here’s a popular wealth-making ritual you might like to try. Get yourself a ceramic container (not too big). Write your name and birthday as well as those of your family members on the container. Place 12 coins inside the container. Also place a compass and a small Chi Lin , an ingot and some real money from nine countries. Bury the container in your front garden at the ideal time of 1pm. If you do not have a garden, you can bury the container in a large flowerpot. The idea is to cover the container with earth so wealth comes to you from the earth. You will start to experience money-making luck within nine days. (No harm trying!)

16Another great way to create wealth luck they say is to place your bank checkbook inside a large red packet. Place 7 joss sticks, some joss paper and dried fruits inside, then meditate for wealth to come to you. Keep your eyes half closed and place the red packet on a table nearby. Meditate for 10 minutes each time. It is said that when you meditate, the more realistic the picture you create in your mind of you receiving wealth, the faster wealth will come to you.

17Sea salt is often used by the Chinese to change a spate of bad luck. Amongst the Chinese in Taiwan, it is believed that if a dark blue or black ceramic mug is filled to the brim with sea salt, and you place it in the dry area of the kitchen, it will not only change your luck, it will also improve relationship between husband and wife. The salt should be changed every 10 days for it to continue to have potency.

18Here’s something you can do if you are going through a hard time in your life. Get yourself a round shaped sweet potato. Carve your name on it then plant it in water. Put it outdoors in the daytime; place it indoors at night. Once the potato starts to grow, eat the tiny leaves and the sweet potato as well, and you are sure to experience a big change in your life.

With St. Patty’s Day upon us, we have to ask: Do you have to be lucky with money to be a BIGG success?

Without question, the answer is…Yes!

If you’re a long-time reader, our answer may have surprised you. But there’s a difference between luck and dumb luck.

For example, winning the lottery is dumb luck. There is absolutely no skill required to win. There is skill required to keep what you win.

That’s why you see so many lottery winners end up worse off than they were before in just a few years.

Wait a minute…why is that, you say?

It’s because BIGG success is life on your own terms. A basic negotiating principle is that you get to set the price or the terms, but not both.

If you set the terms, BIGG success will set the price.

So if you define BIGG success as the possession of money, there’s a price to pay to for it. If you don’t pay that price upfront, you’re likely to pay it afterwards.

What do we mean by “price”? Great question! We’re so glad you asked it.

Have you ever said to yourself, “Why does everything have to be so hard?” That’s the price of BIGG success.

Here are two interesting things about price and BIGG success:

When you work hard to get your money,
you’ll work even harder to keep it.

This is the great money secret. It’s one of the BIGG separators – it’s what people who have created wealth from scratch know.

First and foremost, you have to protect your nest egg. You don’t have to be lucky with money to do that.

Before we move on to the second point, we want to share one more tidbit: It takes more than hard work today. The world is far too competitive to stand out just by working hard.

You must also foster and maintain a laser-sharp focus on the drivers of your BIGG success. We built the BIGG Success Entreprenurturing Center to help you with that. You can join for free!

Now we’re ready for the 2nd interesting thing about price and BIGG success:

When you work hard to get your money,
you gain something more important than money.

You want to see scared? Look at someone who inherited a fortune realize that it’s all gone.

They don’t have a clue how to create a fortune. They only know how to spend one. They are imprisoned by the fear of losing it.

When you create your own wealth, you know how you did it. So you know you can do it again if you have to.

Talk about peace of mind. You’re truly free!

Sure, things may have changed. But the basics of creating wealth remains the same.

You may have to learn how to use some new tools. You may have to think about a different industry. But the knowledge you have is likely transferable.

So to summarize:

  • We believe that you make your own luck for the most part.
  • We believe that people who are diligent are the “luckiest” people in the world.
  • We believe that diligent people sometimes run into bad luck.
  • We believe that BIGG goal-getters find a way to turn that around. It propels them to BIGG success!

What role do you think luck plays in BIGG success?
