What is a Sweet Dumpling Squash?

Sweet Dumpling squash is a winter squash variety that bears small individual sized acorn squash. The fruit is about 4 inches (10 cm.) in diameter, perfect for roasting whole or stuffing. The exterior is a deeply ribbed, ivory white or cream marked by dark green strips, while the interior is an incredibly sweet, tender orange color.

This winter squash stores well post-harvest and is incredibly productive, generally producing 8-10 fruit per vine. It is also fairly disease resistant.

Growing Sweet Dumpling Squash Plants

Sweet Dumpling squash is an open-pollinated heirloom winter squash that can be grown in USDA zones 3-12. Sweet Dumpling is ready for harvest a mere three months from direct sowing.

Sow this variety of winter squash as you would summer squash. That is, sow the seeds an inch (2.5 cm.) or so deep after all danger of frost or start indoors a month prior to the last expected frost in your area. Squash doesn’t do well with transplanting, so if you do start them indoors, sow the seeds into peat pots. Be sure to harden the seedlings off for a week prior to transplanting.

Keep the plants moist but avoid getting water on the leaves which may become afflicted with fungal diseases. Place a layer of mulch around the plants which will help to retard weeds and retain moisture.

As soon as the stems begin to dry and the skin of the fruit is too hard to pierce with a fingernail, harvest the squash. Cut the fruit from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving a bit of stem attached to the squash. Cure the squash in a dry area until the stem begins to shrivel and then store in an area that is 50-55 F. (10-13 C.).


Creamy Soup. Dice a peeled sweet dumpling and simmer in vegetable or chicken broth. Once soft, purée with a blender or food processor. Flavor your soup with minced fresh ginger, onions, and spices (saffron works!), then add a low-fat cream just before serving. Caramelized. Sautéing sweet dumpling squash, like roasting it, caramelizes its naturally occurring sugars. Dice and slice squash and heat on medium-high until squash becomes tender and soft around the edges.

Stuffed! Slice dumpling squash in half and remove seeds and pulp. Rub a baking sheet with olive oil and place the squash cut side down on the sheet. Bake for about 30 minutes. While the squash is cooking, create a mixture of whole grains, cheeses, seasonings, vegetables, and dried fruits to be spooned inside. A Light Meal. Cut around the stem of the squash and remove the top. Scoop out the seeds and pulp and stuff with rice, vegetables, lean beef or chicken, low-sodium seasonings, and a small amount of oil. Bake until insides are heated and squash is tender — a complete meal for one!
Mash ‘Em. Boil sliced sweet dumpling squash for 1 minute and remove skin. Mash peeled squash with a small amount of cream or butter and season with nutmeg.
Glazed. Quarter or slice peeled dumpling squash and roast it with a light glaze of maple or brown sugar. Bake until tender and enjoy! These make great appetizers!
Baked or Roasted. Cut around the stem of your sweet dumpling and remove the top. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then bake the cleaned squash until tender. Enjoy as is, or top with vegetables, cheeses, or seasonings.

Winter Squash Sweet Dumpling 15 seeds

Sweet Dumpling produces a large numer of small fruits. Excellent for stuffing and baking individually. Received the RHS Award of Garden Merit trophy in trials. Matures when really small, only about 10 cm across.

The small, slightly flattened and ribbed pale skinned fruits are great for individual servings. The pale flesh is really tasty. One plant produces up to 15 fruits. Outstanding flavour. Why not cut the top off, scoop the seeds out, staff it with some meat and bake it in the oven, hmm… delicious.

Sow the Sweet Dumpling winter squash seeds from late March through April under glass for growing in the greenhouse, or late April through May to transplant outdoors. Seeds can also be sown direct outdoors, in a finely prepared bed, from late May.

Sow the Sweet Dumpling seeds 2 cm deep in 7.5 cm pots of good compost or in seed cells, 1-2 seeds per pot/cell, so you can save the stronger seedling.

Transplant the seedlings into bigger pots when large enough to handle.

Place in a propagator before transplanting outside. Leave 60-100 cm between plants. Prefer rich and well drained soil. \nReday to harvest when the fruit has reached about 100g in size. They can be left on the vine up to until November and stored in a frost free well ventilated place for up to 6 months.
