The Flexzilla Flexible Hybrid Polymer garden hose with SwivelGrip (bend restrictor and coupler rotator) is an exceptional product. It has two things that make it stand out from other hoses: the couplers, and the fact that I couldn’t get it to kink under pressure (unlike some other hoses I own).

The hose I tested was 5/8 inch by 50 feet, but it comes in lengths from 3 feet to 100 feet in this same 5/8 inch diameter.

  • Maximum working pressure: 150 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) @ 700F
  • Drinking water safe
  • Lays flat (no twisting memory in the hose)
  • No kinking when the hose is under pressure
  • Flexibility in a wide range of temperature extremes
  • Lightweight
  • Coils easily
  • Anodized aircraft aluminum fittings (crash resistant)
  • Abrasion-resistant outer cover
  • Bend restrictor
  • SwivelGrip rotating couplers at each end

The Flexzilla Hose couplers are made of high strength, crush resistant aircraft grade aluminum, and have plastic sleeves (the SwivelGrips) that slide up over them. These sleeves fit snugly over the shape of the outside of the couplers, and come down far enough on the hose that the user’s entire hand will fit on them.

This means that you can use your entire hand strength to turn the coupler, rather than just your finger strength. As someone with age and work damaged hands, I really appreciate this feature! In the past I have found myself resorting to channel lock pliers to remove hoses screwed onto faucets over zealously; I cannot see this happening with this hose. The hose would be great for people with arthritis.

The couplers also turn independently from the hose, so you don’t have to fight with the hose flopping around as you tighten it to the faucet or another hose. This also means that as you work, and turn around corners or turn the nozzle or sprayer end to different angles, the hose doesn’t fight you but turns so there is no stress on it. No more sprinklers flipping over after you put them down.

The hose is easy to install with the SwivelGrip and aircraft grade aluminum fittings

Strong Yet Flexible

The Flexzilla hose feels soft but is very strong. It has a tensile breaking strength of over 25,000 lbs. and will stand up to 150 PSI (at 700 F) without bursting – not many people have water systems with the pressure that high. I tried this hose in 950 F weather and at 400 F, and it was flexible at both temperatures.

Although I couldn’t test it at below freezing temperatures (up to –400 F), the company claims that the hose remains flexible even at this extreme. There’s a video on the Flexilla website that demonstrates how flexible it remains at this low temperature. Standard vinyl and some rubber hoses shatter at this temperature.

Despite this seeming softness at a variety of temperatures, the Flexilla hose is strong enough not to kink. I dragged it all over the yard, around planters and shrubs and porches, and it did not get pinched off. I even dragged it around concrete blocks and the exterior sheath of the hose saw no wear.

Another durability aspect of the hose is abuse from hot metal objects. My husband accidentally put a hot lighter chimney for our BBQ grill on it, and while it melted through the outside abrasion layer, the inner layer is still fine and held up with no swelling under the 70 psi our water system is set at.

You can coil this hose up any old way, and then drag one end out, and it will just uncoil, rather than getting kinks as it gets pulled out. I found that quite impressive. The key is to hold onto the sheath covering the coupler at the end of the hose; this allows the SwivelGrip coupler to turn freely and pull any kinks out of the hose.

When under pressure, however, the hose is more difficult to coil. I recommend turning the water off and releasing the pressure at the hose nozzle or sprinkler before trying to coil the hose.

I do not own a hose reel, so I can’t comment on how it will perform when unrolling. But I think that a hose reel would make it even easier to unwind without kinking. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully – you’ll need to stretch the hose out flat before winding it onto the hose reel the first time.

The hose coiled easily and did not kink when unwound or while dragging it around the garden

The Flexzilla hose is also drinking water safe. That’s good since we have animals. It’s a trademarked chartreuse color that makes it easy to see, even in grass. And the hose comes with an upgraded O-ring washer that virtually eliminates leaks at the spigot and nozzle ends of the hose. In my testing, there were no leaks at all.

The Flexilla hose with SwivelGrip has a limited lifetime warranty (that it is free of defects in material and workmanship for life from date of purchase under normal use), but the terms are daunting – you must ship the entire hose back to them, along with proof of date of purchase and the original retail label (the cardboard carrier that the hose is packaged in).

The Flexzilla hose is made by Legacy Manufacturing, based in Marion IA, but the hose is actually made in Taiwan. Legacy can be contacted via their website.

The Flexzilla hose is filled with features. I liked the green color that showed up in the grass. It made it super-visible and unlikely to be hit with a lawn mower or tripped over. Its high-quality aluminum ends gave the hose a real feeling of quality and the coupler grips (SwivelGrip) make for easy fastening and unfastening of the hose from spigots and nozzles. In my tests, I couldn’t get it to kink even after dragging it through my garden, around corners and coiling and uncoiling it. And, finally, I appreciated the true flexibility of the hose at low temperatures. Overall, it’s a great hose that I would recommend to anyone.

The Flexzilla hose with SwivelGrip (model # HFZG550YWS) can be bought from Amazon for $48.49. SwivelGrip™ Flexzilla® Hose, 50′ is also at Gardener’s Supply, but it doesn’t appear that the SwivelGrip comes in the green color. A similar model without the SwivelGrip (HFZG550YW) is available on multiple sites for less, but we recommend the SwivelGrip as it helps eliminate kinks.

The Flexzilla hose with SwivelGrip (model # HFZG550YWS) The Flexzilla hose with SwivelGrip (model HFZG550YWS, not to be confused with HFZG550YW which doesn’t have the SwivelGrip ends) is top quality, high tech hose that’s truly kink free and built to last. $38.21 See it on Amazon

Who Needs a Flexzilla Garden Hose?

The Flexzilla line of water hoses is great for contractors, landscapers, homeowners that do a lot of watering. Gardeners, backyard enthusiasts, and general users who are sick of poor quality garden hoses will love these hoses. You will pay more for a Flexzilla hose than for a typical lower end water hose from a big box store, but Flexzilla should last longer, and simply work better than most other garden hoses!

This video illustrates many of the major general features of Flexzilla garden hoses:

You don’t necessarily need a housing for this garden hose, but if you would like to put it in a garden hose reel or self-winding hose reel, the Flexzilla will work wonderfully in either of these situations.

Best of all, Flexzilla offers excellent warranties on their garden hoses, with some covered under a lifetime warranty. It’s hard to beat that!

Features Common to All Flexzilla Water Hose Types

  • Drinking water safe!
  • Usually doesn’t kink when pressurized
  • Coils extremely easily
  • No “memory” rubber. Will easily uncoil, even if thoroughly wrapped up for a long time
  • All weather design(-40′ to 150’F)
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Light color hose stays cooler than dark color hoses do
  • Excellent Warranties

Garden Hose Kinks

Garden hose kinks can be a constant headache for gardeners, landscapers, contractors, etc. Flexzilla hopes to cure that headache with its no-kink design.

Note, however, that the garden hose must be under pressure for the kinks to be avoided; the Flexzilla can kink if it is not under pressure, but usually, the task of removing the kink is quite easy, once the pressure is resumed.

No Memory Rubber

The rubber that makes up the structure of the Flexzilla water hose is soft and pliable, even when in direct sunlight for long periods of time, or in the winter cold. The hose does not get caught up in a coil pattern that makes it difficult to unwind, but rather the Flexzilla rubber allows for smooth winding and unwinding of the hose with no difficulty.

Garden Hose Length

Many buyers may be inclined to purchase excess lengths of garden hose “just in case”, but this is unwise. This tendency is only exacerbated by the fact that often the Flexzilla water hose 100′ is within pennies of the cost of the 75′ hose.

It’s much smarter to measure the run to find out the hose that will most closely fit your need, and purchase that length of hose. If you only need at most 75′ but purchase 100′, the hose will be heavier than you need, will take more time to pressurize and depressurize, and will be more likely to kink or cause issues coiling up.

Try to stick with what you need, and don’t overshoot your garden hose purchase.

Flexzilla Garden Hose Reviews

Flexzilla Hose on Wall Mount Rapid Reel

The Flexzilla hose brand name has become one of the most esteemed in the garden accessories industry.

Flexzilla has managed to create extremely high-quality hoses with some outstanding characteristics and sells them at an aggressive price point.

In this section, we look at the three major product lines and compare and contrast the differences between them.

Flexzilla Garden Hose Line

Flexzilla Garden Hose, 50 ft., Heavy Duty, Lightweight, Drinking Water Safe – HFZG550YW

The Flexzilla Garden Hose line of hoses is the base level of Flexzilla’s hoses, though these water hoses are far superior to most of the garden hoses available on the market today.

These hoses are available in several different length options: 25′, 50′, 75′, and 100′, as well as a few shorter lengths for couplings. They feature aircraft-quality anodized aluminum couplings, and won’t rust or wear even in adverse conditions.

  • Lightweight (50′ weighs 9lbs, 75′ weighs 12lbs, and 100′ weighs 16lbs)
  • Available in several different sizes
  • 150 PSI rated
  • No-Kink design
  • Good sealing O-ring gaskets
  • Lifetime Warranty

  • Relatively expensive
  • Can get moldy
  • Loses its bright green color over time

The Bottom Line

For most homeowners who aren’t using their garden hose all day long, many days per year, the Flexzilla standard model will suit their needs perfectly well. The hose is largely kink free, seals nicely, and generally does not have the same tendency to want to coil up in the same way every time, like many garden hoses do.

The fittings on these hoses are made of aircraft grade aluminum, and won’t rust over time. They are well made and will serve most homeowners very well.

Flexzilla SwivelGrip Water Hose

Flexzilla Swivel Grip Garden Hose 50′

The SwivelGrip line of Flexzilla garden hoses is made with the same rubber hose material as the base model, but with an upgraded coupling system that swivels on either end. This allows attachments to swivel against the hose without tangling or otherwise catching the hose in repeated twisting patterns.

  • Lightweight (50′ weighs 9lbs, 75′ weighs 12lbs, and 100′ weighs 16lbs)
  • Available in several different sizes
  • SwivelGrip easier to grab, hold, and turn
  • Great for those with arthritis, carpal tunnel, or other hand grip maladies
  • 150 PSI rated
  • No-Kink design
  • Good sealing O-ring gaskets make coupling easy
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Expensive
  • UV-protection gradually fails on the exterior, and the color dulls
  • Can Get Moldy
  • Swivel grip ends less robust than standard ends

The FlexZilla SwivelGrip garden hose line is quite nice, and if you do a lot of attaching and detaching of sprayers, nozzles, etc., the SwivelGrip connectors are a huge plus. For most homeowners, the SwivelGrip would probably be the top of the line for their needs.

For contractors and landscapers that use a water hose all the time, the Flexilla SwivelGrip will save time and wear on the hands!

This is an excellent garden hose line at a premium price.

Flexzilla Pro Garden Hose

Flexzilla Pro Garden Hose, 50′

The final line of Flexzilla garden hose is the Flexzilla Pro line, which is targeted mainly at contractors and landscapers who use water hose constantly and may find that they frequently break or damage hoses over time.

The Pro line is unique in that the fixtures at each end are removable and replaceable! If, for example, you had a 100′ Flexzilla pro garden hose that ruptured 25′ in, you could cut the hose at that point, remove the fitting from the end, and turn that damaged 100′ hose into a functioning 75′ hose. In fact, if you purchase two more ends, you could turn the 25′ hose into a second hose as well!

For professionals who use garden hoses all the time, this system is a big time and money saver!

  • Lightweight (50′ weighs 9lbs, 75′ weighs 12lbs, and 100′ weighs 16lbs)
  • Available in several different sizes
  • Detachable couplings
  • 165 PSI Rated
  • Great for landscapers and contractors who use and abuse garden hoses
  • No-Kink design
  • Spiral bend restrictors for added flexibility
  • Good sealing O-ring gaskets make coupling easy
  • 2 Year Warranty
  • Expensive
  • Color can fade
  • Detachable ends not a particularly useful feature for most homeowners that don’t want to be bothered
  • 2 Year Warranty noticeably less than the Lifetime warranty on the other Flexzilla hoses

The Flexzilla Pro line is great for those that need to frequently tackle field repairs of garden hoses. The spiral bend restrictors help make bending the hose easy, which is a good feature. While lots of companies call their “really good” line of products their “Pro” line, in this case, Legacy Products really means professional when they refer to this line as their Pro line.

If you’re not using this garden hose daily, for long periods, you probably should be aiming for the SwivelGrip or the Standard.

The main reason non-Professional landscapers should avoid the Pro is the change in the warranty from Lifetime to Two Years.

If you’re not using the hose all day, every day, you probably don’t need the (very cool) cut-and-repair flexibility, but the warranty probably is important to you!.

Choosing the standard or Swivel Grip hose results in a cheaper hose that is essentially just as good quality, and also includes a much better warranty than the Pro.

The poorer warranty on the Pro line is a significant negative compared to the standard models, so if you don’t need the Pro’s features, go for the standard or SwivelGrip. After digging into the three major Flexilla garden hose reviews, we hope you see that these hose reels are great products that are quite useful to many outdoor enthusiasts, whether they be homeowners, landscapers, contractors, or gardeners.

The Standard and SwivelGrip hose lines are fantastic for homeowners and gardeners who use their garden hoses a lot, and demand quality… but who don’t use their hoses every day like a landscaper might.

The Pro line is ideal for landscapers who don’t want to stop a job and head to the store to buy a new hose when one breaks. The ability to repair in the field is a big help for many professionals, and this system works well.

However, the poorer warranty on the Pro line is a significant negative compared to the standard models, so if you don’t need the Pro’s features, go for the standard or SwivelGrip.

Flexzilla Garden Hose with SwivelGrip: Product Review

Why Should You Consider Purchasing This Garden Hose?

Here are some top features on this Flexzilla hose that make it stand out from the rest of the garden hoses.

Swivel Grip Sleeves for Easy Attachment

This Flexzilla hose has couplers that are made of strong, crush-resistant aircraft grade aluminum. These couplers have plastic sleeves also known as swivel grips, which slide up all over them.

The swivel grips are designed to fit snugly over the shaped exterior part of the couplers and down far off the garden hose. This way your hand can fit on it, without any problem thus making it easier to turn the coupler with your hands rather than just fingers.

Besides, this feature makes it ideal for the old hands damaged by constant work, as well as people with arthritis.

Moreover, these couplers can turn independently, from your garden hose. This makes it easier to tighten to another garden hose or faucet without having to fight with a flopping garden hose.

Likewise, it also means that even as you turn the hose nozzle end or make turns around corners, the Flexzilla garden hose will not fight you or make it hard to do so. Instead, it will turn hassle-free. Therefore, the water sprinklers will not be in a position to flip over after you put them down, with this garden hose.

This Flexzilla water hose has a high strength rating but still manages to be highly flexible, thanks to its hybrid polymer material construction. It has a malleable breaking strength of over 25,000 lbs. As for water pressure, it can withstand a PSI of up to 150 at 70°F, no water bursts.

Durable Material Construction

As much as this garden hose is highly flexible, its material construction makes it very durable. It can withstand loads of outdoor elements, from harsh weather conditions to other environmental hazards thanks to its abrasion-resistant exterior covering as well as crush resistant anodized aircraft aluminum fittings.

It is flexible yet still strong enough not to kink when under pressure. You can drag it all over your garden, around your flora and fauna, porches and it will still stand strong, no pinches. Its exterior sheath will not even wear, even if you opt to drag it over and around concrete blocks.

Easy Coil and Unroll

No matter how you coil this Flexzilla garden hose, you can always drag one end of it and it will unroll no kinks, as it is being pulled out. You just hold onto its sheath that covers its coupler on one end, to allow the swivel grip coupler to turn freely, no kinks.

However, when this garden hose is under pressure, it can be difficult to coil. The best thing to do is to turn the water off and release the pressure via the sprinkler or hose nozzle before you coil it.

Moreover, you can make the whole coil and uncoil process, easier through a hose reel. You just have to follow the instruction on use for an effortless job, but always stretch the garden hose flat before winding it onto the hose reel for the first time.

Drinking Water Safe

The hybrid polymer inner tube of this garden hose is what makes it safe for drinking water, just like the stainless steel garden hoses. Moreover, it is also lead-free, with no other harmful chemicals. So feel at ease when using it for drinking water anytime.

Best garden hose: The best hosepipes to buy from £12

Although any hose can help you give your garden the love and attention it needs, buying the right one will make the job a lot easier – and will last a lot longer, too. Hoses may all look pretty similar from the outside, but you have a few options when it comes to material, length and storage. We’ve put together a short buying guide to help explain the key features you absolutely need to understand, but if you’re looking for our top picks and you already know what you want, you’ll find them down below.

Editor’s picks

Best for versatility | Karcher HR4.525 Hose Reel and PrinoFlex Hose

For free-standing or wall-mounted use, Karcher’s 25m offering is made from robust plastic and supplied with a wall bracket, spray gun and four hose connectors including one that stops the flow if the hose isn’t connected. Picking up this complete package makes more sense than shopping around for accessories.

Best auto-retracting hose | VonHaus 20m Garden Hose

This wall-mounted hose reel will automatically retract all 20m of the hose when you’ve finished with it. The mounting bracket pivots through 180° and it comes with all you need to mount it and connect to a tap. The hose itself has an anti-kink design to encourage smooth rewinding, and the unit can be easily lifted off its bracket if you need to move it elsewhere. All that’s missing is a spray gun.

How to choose the best garden hose for you

What types of hose are there?

Generally speaking, rubber hoses are the most durable type of hose you can buy. They’re robust enough to handle higher water pressures, as well as being much less prone to kinks and other wear and tear that can cause damage.

Vinyl hoses, meanwhile, are more susceptible to kinking and other damage, but are available at lower prices. For smaller watering jobs and infrequent use, this shouldn’t be a problem, as long as you store the hose carefully. However, it may be worth spending a little more for a longer-lasting rubber hose if you’ll be using it often.

If you’re still not sure, or your needs fall somewhere between the two, hoses made of a rubber and plastic combination are becoming increasingly popular. They’re stronger and last longer than a vinyl hose, but are more affordable than rubber.

What length of hose should I buy?

Garden hoses are generally sold in 25ft (7.6m) increments, but in-between lengths are beginning to pop up at some retailers. You might assume that a longer hose is better – after all, it gives you more scope to move around – but the longer the hose, the lower the water pressure will be, as the water has further to travel. At the other end of the spectrum, stretching a too-short hose is a surefire way to damage it, and create snags and leaks. Before you buy, it’s best to measure the most distant point from your outside tap, and order the next longest size.

What else should I know?

Hoses come in different plies, which denote how many layers of rubber or vinyl they’re made from. This figure usually ranges from one to six, with six being the strongest. If you’re going to be using your garden hose regularly, it’s worth spending a little bit more to get a stronger hose with more layers.

It’s also worth noting that a hose should be coiled when not in use, but not all hoses come with a hose reel. You can buy one separately, but it’s usually cheaper and easier to spend a little more on a hose that comes on a reel, or even a wheeled cart. As well as saving you a few pounds, you can be sure the reel you’re getting is suitable for the hose you’re buying, and it will help make sure it lasts as long as possible.

The best garden hoses to buy

1. Karcher HR4.525 Hose Reel and PrinoFlex Hose: The best all-round garden hose

Price: £50 | Buy now from Karcher

This Karcher hose offers both simplicity and versatility. It’s lightweight, compact, and comes on a handy space-saving reel, which is also wall-mountable. The comfortable manual handle makes it easy to wind it in quickly and easily, and while the hose is made from plastic – which is why it’s so affordable – it’s far more robust than a standard plastic model.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the reel, which feels more like a budget piece of kit that doesn’t seem like it would withstand regular use. However, it does a great job for infrequent users who want a reliable and easy-to-use hosepipe. At less than £50, this garden hose is an easy winner in our eyes.

2. GroHoze Expandable Connector Hose (15m): An ingenious expanding hose

Price: £24 | Buy now from Amazon

If you’re looking for length but worried about losing precious water pressure when it comes to the harder to reach areas, GroHoze has come up with a handy expandable hose. The GroHoze can expand to up to three times its stored length and maintains all its flexibility while doing so, so you never have to worry about kinks, twists and leaks when you extend it.

The dual latex inner core has been designed to prevent bursting and makes this one of the more durable hoses on this list. Its ten-pattern spray gun, meanwhile, makes it suitable for garden tasks both big and small – even if you probably won’t make use of more than a handful of them.

3. Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose: The best hose for large gardens

Price: £50 | Buy now from Amazon

If you’ve got a long garden, you’re going to find watering difficult – especially if your taps are all at the house end. Rather than lug heavy cans around, a hose cart can get your water where it needs to be. Working like a wall-mounted reel in reverse, the hose unspools as you move the cart down the garden, allowing you to use a short section, often clipped to the frame, for watering.

Available with up to 50m of hose, the downside of a cart like this is that you need to use the integrated handle to wind it in once you’ve finished, as there’s no spring-activated mechanism. This has the benefit of keeping the price down, though, and if you’ve already got a long hose the cart is available on its own so you can upgrade your current watering solution.

Key specs – Length: Up to 50m; Weight: 8kg; Wall mount: No

4. Draper 15m Soaker Hose: The best sprinkler hose

Price: £15 | Buy now from Amazon

Draper Tools’ Soaker hose is little more than a simple, plain black tube – but that hardly matters: the Soaker is a reliable garden sprinkler hose that does a great job of distributing water evenly and across a large area, making it ideal for allotments or large patches of garden. Although the hose has a good number of holes and can cover large sections of lawn, the size of the holes isn’t always consistent. It’s a minor flaw for the price, but if you want a sprinkler hose that distributes water perfectly, you’ll have to cough up a lot more for a premium model.

5. Hozelock Compact 2in1 Reel with 25m Hose: Best hose under £50

Price: £35 | Buy now from Amazon

Hozelock makes several appearances on our list, and with good reason. The 2in1 is a good manual alternative to the auto reel model above, offering an affordable hose and reel combo that won’t take up more room than necessary. The reel’s handle is large and easy to turn, and the closed-in casing design offers an extra level of protection against everyday wear and tear. The carry handle is a nice touch, and although getting the hose and reel set up is a bit fiddly the first time around, the Hozelock is one of the simplest to use around the garden. For a long, good-quality hose under £50, the Compact 2in1 is a great choice.

6. VonHaus 20m Garden Hose: The best auto rewind hose reel

Price: £60 | Buy now from Amazon

If you’re looking for the neatest, most space-saving solution for your garden, an auto rewind hose is a worthy investment. You can wave goodbye to battling with awkward handles or tangled reels, as with this wall-mounted reel you can just grab the end of the hose and walk to the part of the garden you want to water.

The hose is decent quality and the retraction spring has enough oomph to drag it back home after use. The only downsides are that the bolts, attachments and connections aren’t particularly good (some users have reported problems with them shearing off). If you don’t mind shelling out a couple of quid on a handful of beefier bolts and Rawlplugs, however, this is a decent budget option.

It never fails: you roll out your hose, turn on the water, and nothing comes out. The frustration of having a kinked hose, especially if you are on the opposite side of a fence from the kink (like I usually am), never fails to drive a person absolutely nuts. And by the time you have the kink straightened out, and get back to the hose end- you have a puddle of water to walk through in order to complete your watering chore.

Going on the hunt for the best garden hose that doesn’t kink seems daunting at best because as soon as you begin to read through kink-free garden hose reviews, all you read is about how the hose does, in fact, kink after all.

Enter my own personal research that doesn’t promise a complete lack of kinking complaints, but does promise a variable overview of the best kink-free performances under different situations to help you make the best purchase possible.

What Hose Material Won’t Kink?

The most dependable hoses on the market used to be made of rubber and vinyl, but with the advances in technology, and the growth of unique consumer needs, fabrics, nylons, and plastic all are regularly found in their construction. All season, flexible, compact, expanding, and lightweight hoses are all made from different material combinations, although they do tend to have one thing in common: more often than not they kink.

Is there a dependable non-kinking material from which hoses are made of? Is there a true never kink hose material currently in use? In my search for the (almost) 100% non-kinking hose, I found a variety of hose materials and types that aide in preventing kinks through the life of the hose. My conclusion? There is not one single type of hose material that will keep a hose from kinking, but there is a variety of construction designs that most certainly are anti-kink.

How to Test For Hose Kink-Ability

Trying to find a true kink-free hose is definitely a daunting task, but there are a few things you can do either in the store before purchase, or as soon as you receive an online buy to determine if a particular hose is a keeper. The following test pertains to traditional, round, rubber or vinyl hose types and will not work with expandable, or nylon and polymer hose hybrids.

First: remove about 2 feet of hose from the packaging if you can (generally hoses are tied together so you can remove the tie and then replace it). Second: coil the hose back against itself to see if it kinks. If it kinks immediately then it’s a given that it is going to that much easier once warmed from the sun. If it flexes and loops, then you have a hose that is going to kink a lot less easy. Third: try to bend it at a 90 degree (no more) angle. Most hoses will always bend, but those that resist the most are made of a heavier material and will hold up much longer than those that bend easier.

Hose Fittings

The fittings at the end of the hose are generally a universal 3/4th-inch diameter in order to be able to use any standard water spigot and connection to hose nozzles and other hoses. Fittings are generally made of one of two materials: brass, a strong, copper and zinc alloy, or aluminum, a silver metal element that is often used for both it’s strength and difficulty to crush.

Many people often prefer brass fittings over the slightly stronger aluminum versions due to the fact that they will not bind, or stick, when wet and are easy to attach and reattach to various ends with ease. Despite aluminum fittings being strong and less likely to flatten under pressure (say like a by a vehicle tire), they can bind up when wet and be difficult to unscrew from one another without the use of tools to loosen the connection.

Hose Lengths and Diameters

Hoses come in many lengths but are most commonly found in 25, 50, and 100-foot increments, although anything from 10 foot to 200-foot lengths can be found with a little bit of research. Depending On what you need your hose for, consider always buying a longer length than what you expect in order to use it for more than just one job. You can also almost always connect hoses together to provide more length due to universal fittings.

Hose diameters are often as variable as their lengths, and although are generally most found as a 5/8th-inch opening, can span from other popular sizes: such as 3/8ths, ½, and 3/4ths. The wider the hose diameter, the greater the water flow rate will be. Other, more narrow, sizes exist as well but are not as easily found in traditional hose designs.

How to Choose the Best and Lightest Garden Hose for Your Yard

What are you using your hose for?

The purpose of your hose plays an important role in deciding which hose to purchase. Not only will it determine your hose length, but also overall durability. Hose used only for simple patio container watering may not need as much of a sturdy design in comparison to a hose you may want to use for multiple purposes. For example, I use my hoses to water potted plants, water garden plots, wash cars, and drag across the asphalt to fill stock tanks.

Year round use also requires a different hose than just one that only handles certain temperatures. This is an important consideration because some hoses cannot handle the heat of sun-warmed water, or are made of materials that can become compromised if temperatures approach or drop below freezing. Misuse of a hose that specifies a temperature range will often void any existing warranty.

Do you have any weight limitations?

Some of the heaviest hoses are the most sturdy and are the least likely to kink easily. But if you need to have a lightweight hose for easy maneuverability, or because of restrictions with your grip, then you may want to consider a light hose for your comfort level. Alternatives to traditional hoses that are touted as kink-free might be a good alternative: such as coiled, or collapsible hoses.

Where do you want to store your hose?

Some hoses tolerate heat and cold differently or will kink if not taken care of properly and rolled up after each use. Consider where you want to store your hoses, and read up on hose capabilities and their tolerances for storage in different conditions in order to keep your hose lasting as long as possible.

5 Top-Rated Kink Free Hoses to Consider

Lawn Pro Expanding Garden Hose

  • Length: 50 feet
  • Weight: 2.35 lbs
  • Fittings: Brass
  • Materials: Denier woven fabric
  • Size: 5/8th inch
  • Warranty: 12 months

Check The Price

Non-seamed woven denier is one of the strongest fabrics on the market, and this expandable hose is one of the toughest you can buy due to this fact. The great thing about an expandable, or collapsible hose, is that they shrink to approximately a third of their expanded length when emptied of water.

Because this hose ‘deflates’ when emptied of water, and can essentially fold back upon itself, kinks can arise in this state. However, when filled, it becomes kink free as it unfolds and stretches out with the water pressure. It is also considered very difficult to twist or kink in this state since the pressure keeps the hose length fairly consistent during use.

Downfalls of most expandable hoses surround the fact that they should not be used in freezing conditions, nor should they be stored in direct sunlight due to how UV rays can break down the fibers of the materials used over time.

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to store
  • 12-month warranty
  • Expandable/collapsible
  • Cannot kink when filled with water
  • Occasionally needs an extra washer to seal correctly
  • A small percentage of defective tubing (covered by warranty)
  • Weak pressure rate
  • Cloth covering can fray on snaggable surfaces

Recommended for

This is a great kink-free choice if you are looking for a lightweight, medium duty hose. Since the hose, emptied, only weighs in at 2.5 pounds, this is also one of the lightest hoses you can purchase.

Zero-G Kink-Free Garden Hose

  • Length: 50 feet
  • Weight: 4.7 lbs
  • Fittings: Aluminum
  • Materials: Polymer and Nylon fiber covering
  • Size: 5/8th inch
  • Warranty: 5 year

Check The Price

This is an interesting new take on the traditional hose design using a polymer (plastic) and nylon waterproof shell to create a flexible, lightweight, and foldable hose that can stand up to pretty rigorous work around your home and garden.

The 5-year guarantee and newly designed fitting end to keep them protected from accidental crushing is a pretty good selling point when trying out a fairly new product. It is also labeled as drinking water safe and lead-free, which is a great selling point when you have pets and children or are using the hose to water plants that bear edibles.

Rated as a durable, non-snagging hose (unlike many other hoses that have a fabric-like outer covering), the Zero-G is able to be stored either rolled or folded and also tolerates heat fairly well. It is not 100% kink-free, especially when emptied of water due to it’s collapsing nature, but when filled with water, kinks unfold easily with seemingly no memory and definitely no lingering damage. Kinks are few and far between, however, and it really does seem to hold up to a kink-resistant rating.

  • 5-year warranty
  • Fittings are durable
  • Long-lasting design
  • No-slip hold
  • Lightweight and easy to move around
  • Will not roll up unless filled with water, easier to store when folded
  • Kinks unless pulled out and filled with water
  • Leak defect on a small percentage of purchased hoses (covered by warranty)
  • Not for freezing temperatures

Recommended For

This is a good hose for anyone looking for medium to heavier duty work in both the yard and garden and doesn’t plan on using their hose once temperatures drop below freezing.

Legacy Flexzilla Hybrid Garden Hose

Check The Price

Whenever I write a review for hose types, this hose keeps popping up over and over, regardless of whether I am researching for durability, lightweight, drinking water safe, or in this case: kink-free-ish. So by this point, I think it’s safe to say it’s one of the better hoses for your buy on the market for a variety of reasons.

Made from a premium polymer hybrid, this is a hose that stays flexible and generally true to shape in both extreme hot and cold weather, meaning it’s good to go in below freezing temperatures. Extremely durable for a variety of heavy duty jobs around your yard, this is a hose you’ll probably have around for quite some time.

The biggest complaint by far is that it seems to have a severe case of memory, so it is probably best stored rolled on a hose reel in order to keep it’s shape consistent from one use to the next. Improperly stored hoses or those just left coiled on the ground seem to be the most complained about concerning random kinks with both water running and not running. The conclusion? Take care of your hoses to make them last longer and stay as kink free as possible.

  • Durable in high and low temperatures (below freezing)
  • Flexible and easy to roll
  • Lightweight
  • Can handle intense direct sunlight

  • Will keep a curvature memory
  • Kinks if not first spread out and filled with water

This is a great hose for anyone no matter what sort of workload you have lined up in any type of season.

Neverkink Heavy Duty Garden Hose

  • Length: 50, 75, 100 foot choices (other lengths available separately)
  • Weight: 7.7 lbs (50 foot)
  • Fittings: Aluminum
  • Materials: Reflex Mesh patented material
  • Size: 5.8th inch
  • Warranty: lifetime

Check The Price

A mesh reinforcement in this hose is supposed to be the secret technique to keep this particular brand from ever kinking. Rigid sleeves at the fitting ends also help to keep folds where faucet connections occur from happening, as well as providing additional protection to the crush proof aluminum connectors.

Despite it not being durable below 45 degrees, and shouldn’t be used in freezing weather, this hose is reposted to be fairly durable and reliable for a variety of chores around your yard and garden for the remainder of the year. Helpful tips include laying the hose out in a straight line in the sun for a few hours after removing packaging to get rid of any hose memory (probably a good tip for ANY hose), to store it on a hose reel, and to also pressurize it before dragging it around for use as well.

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Fittings tight and durable
  • Does not kink when full of water
  • Easy to wind up for storage
  • Not to be used with hot water
  • Not to be used in freezing weather (loses flexibility below 45 degrees)
  • Will kink, but does reform (areas of original kinks weakened)

This hose seems to be a favorite of gardeners, despite the fact it is more kink-resistant rather than kink-free. And so this particular product is a good choice for seasonal waterers and also for anyone looking for a dependable, easy to use, lightweight hose that with proper care has relatively few kinks through the life of the hose.

Craftsman Rubber Garden Hose

  • Length: 50 feet
  • Weight: 10 lbs
  • Fittings: Nickel plated brass
  • Materials: Rubber
  • Size: 5/8th inch
  • Warranty: lifetime

Check The Price

With all the new technology making its way into the consumer market. It’s hard to find traditional items made from simple materials, but the Craftsman rubber garden hose delivers in this aspect. Manufactured from rubber with brass fittings, this is a sturdy, dependable, all-weather hose that can deliver year-round with little worry of heavy wear or kinking if stored and treated correctly.

The downfall of an all rubber hose is that it can weigh in on the heavy side, but since it can be left out in the elements with no worry of breakdown, you won’t have to move it around too often from place to place. It also held it’s shape and spools up well on a reel, and on the rare occasion it doe kink reviews state it pulls out easily with no memory.

Helpful hints to get started with it include laying it out after unpackaging and filling it with water before using regularly.

  • Low toxins
  • Heat and freezing temperature tolerant
  • Solid construction
  • Durable and reliable
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Black rubber will leave marks on surfaces, especially in the heat
  • Kinks if not stretched out first
  • Is not 100% lead-free

This seems to be a great all-around, heavy duty hose for anyone looking for a durable product. It also has a lifetime warranty which is always a great selling point.

In the search for the best no kink garden hose, I came across a plethora of hoses claiming to be kink-free when they, in fact, did kink, and rather horribly at that. But there were a few gems that stood out to make the grade. The five choices I listed seem to be some of the best on the current market and a common denominator between all of them is that they resist kinking and leakage very well, and if treated and stored correctly, will be a long-lasting, dependable product.

My favorite of the choices I listed is the Eley kink resistant garden hose due to its smart construction, 10-year guarantee, and tolerance for both heat and cold. I’m not a fan of rolling up my hoses for storage and prefer to leave them stretched out when not in use, and this hose seems like a good fit for my variety of tasks I employ a hose for daily. The material is built so that if you DO want to kink it, it’s possible but with its special design, it won’t “remember” that kink and will work as normal when you want it to do so.

Whereas it seems that no hose can truly promise 100% kink-free performance, there are some great ones on the market that certainly try. If you found this article helpful, or have somehow discovered the perfect kink free hose brand- we’d love to hear from you below!

Taking rubber washers for granted most of the time is easy. They’re durable, reliable, and inexpensive. It’s only when something goes wrong, or we undertake a new project that we reach for washers or think about them at all.

That’s when fate intervenes. I don’t know about you, but no matter how many washers I have, I never have the size I need. I leave the water shut off as I hurry to the hardware store and buy a big pack of assorted washers just to ensure that I get the one I need. The rest get tossed into the toolbox with the other unneeded washers I’ve accumulated over the years. I know that the next time I undertake a project, the washer I need will be the only one I don’t have, and it will mean another trip to the hardware store.

Will the washer packs reviewed here save you from a similar fate? They could.

If your projects and repair jobs focus on the same kinds of fittings – if you work with a lot of hoses, say, or indoor faucets – then a pack of specialized washers could be just the ticket.

But if you’re like me, and you never know what kind of project you’ll work on next, you’ll be tempted to get a big assortment of washers. That way you’ll be prepared for any job. It makes perfect sense.

But you’ll also wind up paying for a lot of washers that you’ll never use.

It was not a lot of money and compared to the inconvenience of a trip to the hardware store while your faucet continues to leak or gush, maybe it’s worth it.

What You Need to Know About Garden Hoses

If you’ve ever wrestled with a garden hose, you know how unwieldy they can be. They’re heavy, difficult to drag around, and seem to kink just as you turn on the water. The trend is toward lightweight, kink-resistant hoses that are designed to address these common complaints.

There are two simple ways to reduce the weight of a garden hose—make it out of lighter material or use less material by reducing the hose’s diameter or wall thickness. A smaller diameter weighs less, but it also holds less water, making it lighter while you’re using it too. Of the 50-foot hoses we tested, the smallest diameter was 7/16 in., which held 3.25 pounds of water. The half-inch hose and a 5/8-in. hose held 73% and 104% more water by weight, respectively.

Hoses are typically made of rubber, rubber hybrids, vinyl, or polyurethane. Rubber tends to be more flexible regardless of temperature, but it’s also the heaviest. Polyurethane and hybrids tend to be more kink resistant, and lighter. Vinyl, used for inexpensive hoses, is heavier, prone to kinking, and often has a strong coil “memory.” Polyurethane and hybrid hoses have less coil memory, and will lay flatter as temperatures rise, or if used in the sunlight.

There’s a newer variety of hose that has a very thin, flexible lining inside a woven, fiber jacket. These hoses are very flexible, do not have any coil memory, and rarely kink as a result. Some of these hoses expand both in length and diameter when pressurized with water, until the liner is restricted by the woven jacket. These types of hoses are convenient to store since they collapse when the water is turned off and pressure is released.

Virtually all hoses will kink, even the kink-proof kind. The best way to prevent kinks is to use a hose reel—this allows the hose to roll-up, or unroll, without twisting. If you pull a hose straight from a coil, on the ground or hanging on a wall, it will kink eventually, as the coils tighten and get smaller. This can be avoided to some extent by twisting the hose as you drag it out.

Drinking Water
If you or your animals drink water from the hose, if you fill kids’ swimming pools, or if you connect to an RV, you’ll want to get a hose approved by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation). Ordinary, or unapproved, hoses can leach lead, BPA, or phthalates into the water as it passes through them.

How We Tested These Garden Hoses

The hoses on this list have been thoroughly vetted and evaluated by our test editors. We research the market, survey user reviews, speak with product managers and engineers, and use our own experience with these hoses to determine the best options. We evaluated them based on dry weight, friction when dragged, kink resistance, as well as rate of flow. To measure friction, we used a spring scale attached to the hoses, and dragged them, while full of water, across grass and concrete. Flow rate was determined by attaching each hose directly to a faucet, and with no restriction, used a stopwatch to time filling a five-gallon bucket. Finally, for the hoses that claimed to have crush-resistant couplings, we drove a 4,500-pound truck over the connected couplings on a paved surface. If you need a new hose, chances are very good that you’ll find one to suit your needs on this list.

Teknor Apex NeverKink Pro

Courtesy Teknor Apex NeverKink Pro $26.99

  • Good flow rate.
  • Crush resistant coupling.
  • Possible to kink.

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 75 ft | Material: n/a
Weight: 11.4 lb | Flow rate: 517.5 gph | Burst strength: n/a

The NeverKink Pro Farm & Ranch, from Teknor Apex’s commercial line, features a spring collar to prevent kinking at the faucet, large-diameter aluminum couplings, and patented anti-kink technology. It is not kink-proof however—it could kink when dragged from a coil on the ground while hot, and soft, from sitting in the sun. It was easier to use on hard surfaces, taking 7.8 pounds of force to drag to full extension, at 50 feet, on concrete sidewalk—on grass it took 32 percent more force. The couplings were easy to connect tightly and proved to be crush resistant when run over with a truck. The NeverKink Pro is a heavy-duty hose that will move a lot of water quickly and stand up to rough conditions.

Gilmour Professional Rubber Hose

Courtesy Gilmour Professional Rubber Hose, $40

  • For hot water up to 180°
  • High flow rate
  • Heavy

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Virgin rubber
Weight: 11 lb | Flow rate: 549.5 gph | Burst strength: 400 psi

Gilmour’s Professional Rubber Hose is a beast. At 11 pounds for a 50-foot hose it’s heavier than most, but it’s made from 100 percent virgin rubber. It is flexible in a wide temperature range, rated for hot water up to 180°, and it has the highest flow rate of all the hoses we tested. The force to drag it to full extension, 50 feet, on concrete was 12.3 pounds, and 13.4 pounds on grass. This is to be expected, though, as this hose is designed to move a lot of water and hold up to commercial use—expect this rubber hose to last for years with proper care. The Professional Rubber Hose is ideal for janitorial operations, washing down equipment—especially in winter—and anyplace you need to reach with hot water.

Water Right 600 Series

Courtesy Water Right 600 Series $94.92

  • High flow rate
  • Kink resistant
  • Expensive

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Polyurethane
Weight: 5.8 lb | Flow rate: 546.3 gph | Burst strength: n/a

Although it’s made of the same materials, Water Right’s 600 Series delivers more than twice as much water as its 7/16-linch 400 Series. While it doesn’t feel light like the 400, it actually is light for a 5/8-inch hose that can deliver over 540 gallons per hour. It has nicely machined and chrome-plated, brass couplings, strain-relieving collars at each end to prevent kinks, and just like the 400, this hose is safe for drinking water. In our drag test, it took 8.6 pounds of force to pull the hose out to its full 50-foot length on concrete, while it took 12.3 pounds to do the same on grass. The 600 Series is relatively easy to handle and stays flexible though a wide range of temperatures. It is designed for any type of garden or lawn watering task, but also works well for watering pets and livestock, RV hook-ups, and just about anything else you need a hose for.

GrowGreen Expandable Hose

Courtesy GrowGreen Expandable Hose $59.99 $34.99 (42% off)

  • Light and easy to store
  • Brass couplings
  • Material can abrade on rough pavement

Inside dia.: Variable | Length: 50 ft | Material: Latex, polyester
Weight: 2.2 lb | Flow rate: 262.7 gph | Burst strength: n/a

The GrowGreen Expandable hose almost seemed like a novelty at first. But, the convenience of the weight, storage size, and the nice brass coupling with shut-off valve convinced us otherwise. This was the easiest hose to drag out to full extension at 50 feet, taking 2.3 pounds of force on concrete and 3.5 pounds on grass. This hose is primarily designed for watering tasks, but we also dragged it on unsealed pavement and found that the polyester casing is susceptible to abrasion and pilling. So, it isn’t ideal for washing cars in the driveway. The GrowGreen hose starts out at 17 feet long and once pressurized, expands to full length. The hose comes with a spray nozzle with eight patterns, which is a nice bonus. Using the hose without the nozzle, with the water to flow unrestricted, allows it to start shrinking—so you’ll need to use the nozzle to get use of the full 50-foot length.

Teknor Apex Zero-G

Courtesy Teknor Apex Zero-G $38.99

  • Stores easily
  • Crush-resistant couplings
  • Lower flow rate than 5/8″ hoses

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Flexible liner, woven jacket
Weight: 4.3 lb | Flow rate: 388.2 gph | Burst strength: 600 psi

The Zero-G from Teknor Apex is a newer type of hose with a flexible core, in a woven fiber sleeve. This makes the hose very light and easy to store as it can be coiled tightly, folded, or even crumpled in a ball—one staff member stores two, coiled in a bucket. Flow rate is claimed to be similar to other 5/8-inch hoses, but we found it a little lower than others we tested. The big, knurled hose couplings were easy to grip, tightened leak-free, and withstood being driven over with a 4,500-pound truck. The Zero-G is pretty slippery, taking only 3.9 pounds of force to drag out to full length on concrete sidewalk—and just 10 percent more on grass. While kinks are possible, they’re rare and easy to clear. This hose is safe for drinking water, so it can supply water to an RV, fill kids’ swimming pools, and water pets or livestock, in addition to everything else you use a hose for.

Gardener’s Water Right Light

Courtesy Gardener’s Water Right Light $34.95

  • Light and easy to handle
  • Kink resistant
  • Lower flow rate

Inside dia.: 1/2 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Polyurethane
Weight: 3.2 lb | Flow rate: 295.3 gph | Burst strength: n/a

Gardener’s Water Right Light 50-foot hose earns its name, weighing in at just 3.2 pounds. It’s optimized for weight by using small 1/2-inch diameter, polyurethane tubing and aluminum fittings. In use, this is evident, dragging it out to full length on grass takes only 4.9 pounds of force and just a little more at 5.8 pounds on concrete. This makes it convenient to handle in the garden, on the patio, or around raised beds. Kink resistance is good, and the weight makes it easy to correct or avoid kinks by twisting or flipping the hose. It is intended for garden use, and it is ideal for that, but it is also drinking-water safe, so it could be used for an RV hook-up as well. It could also be used for anything else, although the flow rate isn’t optimal for things that require a large volume of water.

Craftsman Premium Hybrid Rubber

Courtesy Craftsman Premium Hybrid Rubber $26.99

  • Flexible down to -25°
  • Inexpensive
  • Lower burst strength than other 5/8″ hoses

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Hybrid polymer
Weight: 7.2 lb | Flow rate: 505.9 gph | Burst strength: 450 psi

The Craftsman Premium Hybrid Rubber hose is versatile with features similar to more expensive models. It has a large, aluminum coupling that is knurled, easy to tighten, and crush-resistant beneath the wheels of a 4,500-pound truck. The 5/8-inch diameter hose will deliver over 500 gallons per hour and is safe to use with hot water up to 160°. The hybrid polymer material stays flexible down to -40° and is kink, abrasion, oil, and chemical resistant. There is a large, steel spring strain reliever on the faucet end of the hose to prevent kinking. In our drag test, it took a relatively low 6.8 pounds of force to pull it out to full length on grass, and just a little more, 7.2 pounds, on a concrete sidewalk. The Premium Hybrid Rubber hose is a very good all-around hose for any use, except for drinking water.

Gilmour Flexogen Pro

Courtesy Gilmour Flexogen Pro $54.99 $41.77 (24% off)

  • Steel, crush-resistant couplings
  • High flow rate
  • Heavier hose

Inside dia.: 5/8 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: n/a
Weight: 9 lb | Flow rate: 538 gph | Burst strength: 650 psi

A hose for extreme conditions, Gilmour’s Flexogen Pro is designed to survive “professional” abuse. With eight layers in the casing, kink-resistance is good, although it can kink when it’s hot from sitting in the sun. A coiled spring collar is provided on the faucet end of the hose to protect against kinking. The enhanced casing also increases burst strength and durability on rugged job sites. The large, steel, hex-shaped couplings proved to be crush resistant, under the tires of a 4,500-pound truck. Flow rate is on the high end of those we tested, delivering over 530 gallons an hour. Dragging the hose out to its full length on a concrete sidewalk required 9.8 pounds of force, while on grass it took 20 percent more effort. The Flexogen Pro is suited for construction sites, auto repair shops, anywhere around heavy equipment, as well as watering the lawn at home.

Water Right 400 Series

Courtesy Water Right 400 Series $69.95

  • Drinking water safe
  • Light and easy to handle
  • Low flow rate

Inside dia.: 7/16 in | Length: 50 ft | Material: Polyurethane
Weight: 3.4 lb | Flow rate: 244.6 gph | Burst strength: n/a

Optimized for light weight, Water Right’s 400 Series hose is made of polyurethane with a 7/16-inch inside diameter. Pulling it out to full length on a sidewalk required 4.9 pounds of force, while on the grass it took 6.2. The polyurethane hose is flexible though a wide temperature range, and effective strain relievers on both ends prevent kinking at the faucet or nozzle. Couplings on the 400 Series are made from finely machined brass, are chrome plated, and thread together easily. The flow rate is less than others tested, due to the reduced hose diameter, which is a trade-off for weight and maneuverability. The 400 Series is easy to handle and ideal for watering anywhere you need to flip the hose to avoid obstacles, plantings around a patio, or raised beds, and anything else you need a hose for—plus it’s drinking-water safe.

12 Best Garden Hoses (Review) In 2020

Features To Look For In Garden Hose

As we said at the outset of this best garden hose review guide if you just grab the first garden hose you see you’ll likely be doing yourself, your wallet and your garden a disservice. Here are the things to keep in mind when looking for the right garden hose.

Length – If you just grab any old garden hose you may be in for a surprise when unspool it to water the garden. That’s because there is no standard length for a garden hose. They typically come in 25, 50, 75 and 100 foot lengths. So if you need 75 feet and grab 25 feet, well, it’s back to the store for more hose. The best thing to do before you spend your hard earned money on something that’s not going to fulfill your needs is to get out in the yard and measure how far it is from the faucet on the side of the house to the furthest point you’ll need to water.

And remember, the longer the hose the heavier the hose. So don’t just pick up a 100 foot hose in order to cover all the bases if that’s not what you need. If all you really need is a 25 foot hose it will be a major headache to move the super long hose around and re-coil it when you’re done. In addition, the longer the hose the less the water pressure. And water pressure is important if you use attachments to distribute water.

Diameter – The diameter determines two things: how much water is released and how heavy the hose will be when it’s full of water. Most garden hoses are 5/8″, although 1/2″ and 3/4″ inch hoses are also available. In most cases a 5/8 inch hose will be appropriate for just about any backyard application. 1/2 inch hoses will also work for hand watering the flower beds and such but anything larger than that and you are getting into the realm of large scale commercial applications. Keep in mind that a 3/4 inch hose will carry twice the water volume of a 5/8 inch hose. And twice the water volume means twice the weight. If you are unsure which diameter to get, but the area that needs watering is nothing out of the ordinary, a 5/8 inch hose should serve you well.

Material – The garden hose may be fashioned from any one of several different materials.

Rubber – For years rubber was considered the best, most reliable material from which to make a garden hose. After all, it’s flexible, which reduces the chance of the hose kinking and breaking, it’s durable (tires are made of rubber for a reason) and it is pretty much impervious to weather, within reason. It also responds well to high water pressure, where less substantial materials my spring a leak.

So why isn’t every garden hose made of rubber? For one, because it’s heavy. A 50 or 100 foot rubber water hose full of water is going to present a challenge even for a healthy person to drag around the yard. Still, rubber hoses are fairly common for all the above-cited reasons. Plus the fact that many are rated safe to drink from and a rubber hose is also better at handling hot water. So if you ever need to drain the water heater for any reason you can use your rubber garden hose.

Vinyl – The vinyl garden hose is a lightweight alternative to the rubber garden hose. They’re easy to drag around and easy to coil up when you’re done with them. They’re also typically the least expensive type of garden hose. The vinyl garden hose is good for use in moderate climates where it never gets extremely hot or cold.

That’s because extreme heat can warp a vinyl hose and extreme cold can cause it to become brittle, even if it’s sitting in your garage during the winter unused. When you take it out in the spring to get gardening you may find that during the winter it developed cracks. Even in moderate climates however, the vinyl hose will eventually develop cracks and leaks, particularly around the connectors.

Polyurethane – Polyurethane occupies a kind of grey area between vinyl and rubber. The polyurethane hose is usually free of harmful chemicals so many of them are theoretically safe to drink from, it’s stronger than vinyl, almost as light and it’s very flexible like rubber. The polyurethane hose can also be used to transport hot water and does not develop kinks easily, like a vinyl hose will.

So what is keeping every hose from being a polyurethane garden hose? Because they cost more than vinyl and many people don’t see the point of investing the extra cash in something that’s just going to move water from the house to the flowers. Still, if cost is not a major consideration for you then it’s likely you won’t regret purchasing a polyurethane water hose.

Hybrid – Some contemporary garden hoses are fashioned from hybrid polymers that provide reliable flexibility and extreme durability at the same time. Others feature multi-layered construction with latex or some other similar fabric inside and a tougher but still flexible outer layer over the top. This type of construction makes for a very light and flexible hose, even when the temperature plummets to well below zero. Still other hoses feature a polyurethane/PVC hybrid blend that again is extremely durable, lightweight and flexible.

Flexibility – Flexibility is important for a couple of reasons. First, when you finish with the hose you have to coil it up. If the hose is not flexible coiling it will cause it to kink, which will eventually cause cracks to appear. Often sooner rather than later. Second, you need to be able to move the hose around backyard obstacles and often into out of the way areas. And to do so it needs to be flexible. Most every type of hose will kink up to some extent. It’s a matter of how well they respond to kinking. Rubber hoses for example snap back to their original shape easily and dependably. While vinyl hoses, for all their lightweight affordability, will not suffer kinks very long or very often before developing cracks.

Couplings – The connectors on a garden hose may be made from any of several different materials.

Plastic – Yup. Plastic. Some garden hose connectors are fashioned out of high quality plastic that’s tough and light and relatively durable. But their main attraction is that they’re inexpensive. That said even the most durable plastic coupling isn’t going to be able to compete with brass or stainless steel in the toughness arena and is likely to need replacement after a year or two at most.

Stainless – Stainless steel connectors are likely to outlive your hose. They’re unaffected by weather extremes, won’t chip or crack like plastic connectors can and are virtually impervious to damage from being dropped or dragged across the yard or the driveway.

Brass – Brass connectors come in two forms: either cast or stamped. Stamped or formed brass couplings are the more fragile of the two and can be damaged without much effort. Even so they’re still more durable than plastic. Cast brass connectors are the classic garden hose connectors. They’re heavier and tougher than stamped brass and as tough as stainless steel. Brass has the added benefit of being naturally antimicrobial. Which is why brass connectors have long been a garden hose favorite.

Aluminum – In recent years aluminum couplings have become increasingly popular. They’re light, inexpensive, corrosion resistant and tough. Couplings cast from aircraft grade aluminum are almost (almost) as tough as those cast from brass or stainless steel. If aluminum has a downside it’s that it is susceptible to microbial development.

Types Of Garden Hoses

While many folks tend to think a garden hose is a garden hose, there are actually quite a few different types of garden hose ranging from the traditional to the expandable and running the gamut from cheap to pretty darned expensive.

Traditional – The traditional garden hose has been around for decades and is as familiar a part of the domestic landscape as the porch light or mailbox (although the mailbox is becoming something of an endangered species of late). This is an all-purpose hose used for everything from watering the lawn to washing the car. It’s usually fashioned from vinyl, rubber or polyurethane and can be anywhere from 25 to 100 feet in length. Most of the garden hoses on our list are a form of traditional garden hose.

Flat hoses – The flat hose looks like a miniature version of the firefighter’s hose. It lays flat on the ground with a deflated appearance until the water is turned on. Flat hoses are typically made of vinyl and are best for applications that don’t require a lot of flexibility. It’s not common to find them in homes but it’s not unheard of.

Sprinkler hoses – The sprinkler hose is perforated along its length and sends a mist into the air that settles on the garden or lawn. Some people turn them around so that the perforations are face down and use them as a soaker hose. Typically sprinkler hoses don’t work well in flower beds because the plants prevent the mist from rising.

Soaker hoses – Soaker hoses can be found in gardens nationwide where they are used to seep water into the soil so it can be soaked up by plant roots. Soaker hoses make efficient use of water and many are used on a semi-permanent basis in gardens, although they’re often covered in mulch because they can be negatively affected by direct, prolonged sunlight.

Pocket hoses – The pocket hose (also known as the “expandable garden hose”) expands to about 3 times its empty size when you turn on the tap. Several of the hoses on our list are expandable garden hoses for good reason. They’re good for around the yard like long hoses but they pack away neater than even a short garden hose. The downside of the expandable garden hose is that they tend not to last very long and they can be damaged by regular exposure to sunlight.
