Planting & Growing

Pride Of Houston Yaupon Holly will grow to be about 18 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 12 feet. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore doesn’t necessarily require facer plants in front, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 25 years. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It is particular about its soil conditions, with a strong preference for rich, acidic soils, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is quite intolerant of urban pollution, therefore inner city or urban streetside plantings are best avoided, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. This is a selection of a native North American species.Pride Of Houston Yaupon Holly makes a fine choice for the outdoor landscape, but it is also well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers. Its large size and upright habit of growth lend it for use as a solitary accent, or in a composition surrounded by smaller plants around the base and those that spill over the edges. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag – this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.

Holly, Pride of Houston Yaupon

Ilex vomitoria ‘Pride of Houston’

Native to Texas, Yaupon Holly is a species of holly that tolerates the hot and dry Texas summers with relative ease, however prospers when provided more ideal conditions. Yaupons include evergreen shrubs or small trees with light gray bark, and small oval shaped alternate leaves with coarsely serrated margins. It forms multiple stems in clumps, giving the plant some density despite the smaller leaves.

The small white flowers in the spring are somewhat striking; however the red drupe berries that follow in the fall to winter are the main attraction. They stay on during the winter, attracting birds and other wildlife as a food source. ‘Pride of Houston’ Yaupon is an all-female cultivar, guaranteeing berries every season.

Ilex vomitoria received its name from its usage with Native Americans; it was an ingredient in teas used in rituals that would induce vomiting. Yaupon tolerates nearly any quality type of soil, and can be grown along the coastline as well.

Growing Yaupon Hollies: Learn About Yaupon Holly Care

A yaupon holly shrub (Ilex vomitoria) is one of those plants gardeners dream of because it tolerates almost anything. It transplants without shock and thrives in soil that is wet or dry and alkaline or acidic. It needs very little pruning and insects aren’t a problem. The tolerant nature of this shrub makes yaupon holly care a breeze.

Info on Yaupon Holly

Like most hollies, yaupon is dioecious. This means that only the female plants produce berries, and there must be a male plant nearby to fertilize the flowers. One male yaupon holly produces enough pollen to fertilize several female plants.

Standard yaupon hollies grow 15 to 20 feet tall, but there are several cultivars that you can maintain at heights of 3 to 5 feet. ‘Compacta,’ ‘Nana’ and ‘Schillings Dwarf’ are among the best of the dwarfs. If you prefer yellow berries, try ‘Yawkey’ or ‘Wiggins Yellow.’ ‘Fulsom’s Weeping,’ ‘Pendula’ and ‘Gray’s Weeping’ are weeping forms

with long, pendulous branches.

Regardless of the cultivar, growing yaupon hollies brings strong texture and unsurpassed color to winter landscapes. Native to the Southeastern United States, it is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 7b through 9.

How to Care for a Yaupon Holly

Plant yaupon holly in a location with plenty of sun. Although it tolerates afternoon shade, you’ll get more, and better, berries in full sun.

Keep the soil around the shrub moist until it becomes established. Don’t amend the soil or fertilize yaupon hollies at planting time unless the soil is very poor. Use a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch to keep the soil evenly moist.

Fertilize yaupon hollies annually in spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or spread the fertilizer at half the recommended rate. Lawn fertilizers are very high in nitrogen, so avoid spreading them near your hollies.

Pruning Yaupon Holly Bushes

Yaupon hollies look their best when left to develop their own, naturally attractive shape. A little judicious snipping to remove damage and wayward growth is all it needs. If you want to grow it as a small tree, limit it to a single upright trunk and remove the lower side branches. Yaupons aren’t the best choice for formal, sheared hedges, but they make lovely informal screens.

Long-neglected hollies can become an eyesore. One way to restore them is through a pruning practice called hat-racking. Cut the uppermost lateral branches to short stubs and as you move further down leave them a little longer. When you are done, the plant should have a cone shape. At first, you might think you have transformed your eyesore into something even worse, but as new growth fills in, it will develop a nice shape.

Landscape ShrubsDwarf Yaupon Holly(Ilex vomitoria ‘Nana’)

If your house is less than 25 years old, you may have one or both of these hollies in a landscape bed around the foundation of your home. Japanese holly (Ilex crenata) and dwarf yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria ‘Nana’ and similar cultivars) are favorite broadleaf evergreen shrubs for foundation beds throughout the South.

From a distance, Japanese holly and dwarf yaupon holly appear almost identical. Only subtle differences can separate these two distinct species. While very subtle differences in the serration (teeth) along the leaf margin can be used, a person can typically tell these species apart by looking at the young twigs. Twigs on Japanese holly are almost always green on the young shoots, while young twigs on yaupon holly will either be a purplish or gray color depending on the cultivar and time of year.

What are the characteristics of Yaupon Holly fruit?

Fruit color is the most reliable trait to separate these species, however. These hollies are dioecious, so an individual plant is either a male or female. Fruits on female yaupon holly are a beautiful red, in contrast to the shiny black fruits of Japanese holly. Fruits on both are pea-sized (1/4”) and usually persist into the winter. Typically the beautiful red fruits on dwarf yaupon holly (and most female cultivars) do not have the same dramatic effect as we see in weeping yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria ‘Pendula’).

In general, the fruit on either of these holly species will not add greatly to your landscape. The flowers also make little or no contribution. Flowers on either species are very small and white. Yaupon holly should flower before Japanese holly.

What are some of the uses of hollies in the landscape?

The reason for planting either of these evergreen hollies is for the useful plant habit. There are many selections of either species which make great options in a foundation planting, as a mass planting in an island bed, or as a low filler plant in a mixed shrub border. Some good, mounded selections of Japanese holly include ‘Compacta,’ ‘Convexa,’ ‘Helleri,’ ‘Hoogendorn,’ and ‘Soft Touch.’ ‘Convexa’ is easily identified since you can see the ‘convex’ (cupping down) nature of the leaves so easily. ‘Helleri’ is a choice form because it has an excellent and distinctive habit without pruning.

Are there cultivars with similar plant habits?

If you are looking for similar plant habits in the dwarf yaupon holly group, consider one of the following cultivars: BordeauxTM, ‘Nana,’ and ‘Schillings’ (‘Stokes Dwarf’). Most of these mounded types will average 2’ tall with a width of 4’–5’. Gardeners in the northwest part of Arkansas may want to stick with Japanese holly, which in theory is more cold hardy; gardeners in central and southern Arkansas may prefer yaupon hollies, which tend to be more heat tolerant.

Both of these species offer a unique, pencil-thin upright form. ‘Sky Pencil’ is the Japanese holly version of ‘Will Fleming’ yaupon holly.

How do I care for Yaupon and Japanese Holly?

For either of these species, good soil drainage is critical. The most common reason for death with these plants is heavy, wet soil, often found in compacted sites after new construction. Besides this specific soil requirement, it is rare to see a serious insect or disease problem on either of these species.

You will enjoy the very clean, small, evergreen foliage of either of these plants. If you can avoid the temptation, keep your hedge shears away from these delightful mounded cultivars.

The rate of growth is about 10-20cm per year. Ilex crenata will grow to about 5 metres tall in time, but can be easily kept trimmed to topiary shapes, or a low or medium height hedge.

Ilex crenata ‘Convexa’ has dark green, slightly convex, evergreen leaves. When trimmed to a hedge or topiary shape, it looks very like buxus sempervirens. Ilex crenata ‘Stokes’ is similar to ilex crenata ‘Convexa’, with slightly softer and flatter leaves. Ilex crenata ‘Golden Gem’ has good golden foliage, especially when grown in a sunny situation.

Small (15-20cm) ilex crenata hedging plants are usually planted at about 4 plants per metre. Ilex crenata shrubs around 30cm tall may be planted at about 3 plants per metre, while 60cm ilex crenata bushes are usually spaced at about 2 plants to the metre. The exact spacing will depend on plant size and how complete a hedge is desired initially.
