Both the liver and gallbladder are involved in digestion, the former being responsible for the production of bile and the latter storing this bitter fluid and increasing its potency. When fatty food enters your small intestine, the gallbladder releases bile to improve the digestion of fats (and protein).

As a result of its longstanding and widespread use as a natural remedy for impaired digestive organs, black Spanish radish has getting a lot of attention from scientists focused on modern medicine and nutritional studies. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology investigated the effects of juice squeezed from black radish root on cholesterol gallstones and serum lipids on mice fed a lithogenic diet (i.e. a diet that promotes formation of gallstones and increases cholesterol and triglycerides levels). After treatment with black radish root juice for 6 days, the mice had significantly fewer cholesterol gallstones, and their cholesterol and triglycerides levels had dropped as well. In addition, there was an increased in HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”) levels.

Interestingly, however, people with existing gallstones are often advised to avoid eating radish in large amounts, perhaps because it could cause the gallstones exit the gallbladder and then get stuck inside the common bile duct.

Another study focused on the potential liver-detoxifying properties of an extract derived from the taproot of the black radish plant. The researchers found that the black radish extract effectively induced detoxification enzymes in the tested liver cancer cell line. These anti-cancer effects were largely attributed to 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MIBITC), an isothiocyanate metabolite of glucoraphasatin. This study appeared in the August 2007 edition of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Important notice: If you have gallbladder stones or suffer from severe kidney or liver problems, don’t use black radish medicinally (i.e. in large amounts or in the form of concentrated supplements) before consulting a qualified health care professional. Also pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using more than usual food amounts in order to stay on the safe side.

Radish Leaves Are Edible and They Provide Health Benefits, Too

In 2009, a team of researchers published a study in the Journal of Functional Foods which showed that not only the root portion of Spanish black radish can induce detoxification enzyme expression in the HepG2 human liver carcinoma cell line, but also the leaves have similar liver-detoxifying effects. In addition, the researchers found that the radish leaves had significantly greater antioxidant potential than the roots (regardless of whether the antioxidant capacity was measured by the FRAP or the ORAC method). So next time you buy a bunch of black radishes with young, intact leaves still attached, don’t toss them on the compost pile. Instead, turn them into a delicious side dish by sautéing them on a frying pan.

Black Radish for the Prevention and Treatment of the Common Cold

In terms of flavor, black radish is much stronger and more pungent than its white counterpart. But that hot spiciness is just one reason why black radish makes an ideal food for cold winter days. Anecdotal evidence suggests that pungent foods, such as black Spanish radish, can help prevent and ward off colds and flu by stimulating mucous membranes and clearing congestion.

If you have no luck in finding fresh black radishes in your area, you can always grow your own if you have a garden. Seeds are available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, and they will yield delicious round black radishes in about 50 to 55 days after planting. The ideal time for planting this “winter radish” is in mid to late summer.

Radishes, which are a member of the brassica family are grown for their crisp, juicy, swollen roots. The small, round, red globes are the best known types but radishes come in a variety of shapes and colours. They are very quick growing but pick them young when the flesh is crisp and juicy as they can get tough and woody as the plants get older. Sow successionally to get crops from April to September.
Winter radish can be sown from June and will extend cropping into November. The hotness of radishes comes from compound also found in mustard and horseradish. Radishes contain
antioxidants and Vitamin C.

Black Spanish Round is a very unusual radish. It has a rough Black Skin with crisp white flesh and a peppery taste. It is an interesting radish to grow and can be lifted in Late autumn and stored in boxes of sand.

How to grow:
Strictly speaking radish should be grown in your brassica rotation but they are useful to pop into any space you have in the garden or sown as a catch crop between slower growing
brassicas.
Sow seeds direct into the growing site from March until September. Make drills 2 cm deeps and 15 cm apart in well prepared soil and sprinkle the seed in thinly. Water if dry.
Germination will take just a few days and they can be ready for harvest in as little as three weeks.

Pests and diseases:
Radish can suffer from flea beetle but as they are so quick growing and flea beetle only effects the leaves it is not really a problem.

How to cook:
Radish is usually eaten raw in salads. Cut off the root and the leaves at the base of the stem and wash. Use whole or cut as required.
Sliced radish is great in potato salad where the hot crispness combines well with the cool potato and mayonnaise.

Radishes are common spring vegetables. Many of us grow our own because they are easy to grow, take only about 25 days from planting until harvest and are delicious fresh or even cooked. Black radishes (Raphanus sativus niger) are heirloom radishes that are significantly more peppery than the rosy red radish. They also take about two to three times longer to mature than the common red radish. There are two varieties: a round one that looks much like a black turnip and a long one, which is cylindrical and can get to about 8 inches long. The long variety is more pungent than the round but both have flesh that is crisp, white and peppery. To quell some of the spiciness, remove the black peel from the radishes.

Black radishes are members of the Brassicaceae or Brassica family. These annual root vegetables may also be found under the names Spanish radish, Gros Noir d’Hiver, Noir Gros de Paris and the Black Mooli. Unlike its common radish cousin, black radishes can be stored long after harvest season has past. Submerge the roots in a box or carton of moist sand and then place it in a cool place that won’t freeze or keep black radish in a perforated bag in the refrigerator.

How to Grow Black Radish

Grow black radishes much as you would the common rosy radish, although as mentioned they will take longer to mature – about 55 days. Plant black radish from mid to late summer (or in the fall in mild climates) either directly sown into the garden or started indoors to be transplanted.

Space the plants 2-4 inches apart or even farther if you want larger radishes. Sow the seeds in well-draining, loamy, soil that has been raked free of stones. Situate the radish bed in an area that gets at least 6 hours of sun and with a soil pH of 5.9 to 6.8.

Black Radish Care

Black radish care is minimal. These plants are unfussy as long as you keep the soil slightly moist. You can pick black radishes when they are 3-4 inches across. Healthy radishes will have an even black to dark brown skin and will be firm and smooth. Avoid radishes that give in to a light squeeze as they will be pithy.

You can then eat your radishes immediately after harvest or store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Remove the greens and wrap the radishes in plastic first. If your radishes are a little too hot for your liking, peel them, slice and salt, and then rise with water before using.
